Editorial Reviews

AUVERGNE Amidst the central mountains of France lies a relatively undiscovered region, euro- pe's largest Volcanic area: The Auvergne. This fact alone makes it interesting but the Auvergne also abounds in gems of Roma- nesque architecture and romantic towns and cities. PROVENCE Provence is the most frequently visited region of France....and it is no surprise. Of course there are it's lovely beaches, but inland too there is the Camarque with it's horses, cities such as Avignon, Roman architecture..Oh...and the cuisine, and it all goes on under that clear blue sky. So, You can open a bottle of wine and enjoy the wonders of Provence on this DVD which is presented in super picture quality.

This is a very strange DVD set.

The footage of France all predates the Euro. Around 1999 most signs with prices listed the French Franc (F) with a Euro equivalent, that places the footage at 1998 at the youngest. It also predates fine HD videography. The colors are muted, there is significant dot crawl (sharp edges where the individual image dots appear to move around), and the sound is strictly stereo. The narration ranges from slightly amusing to nonsensical. The narrator sounds Australian, but not the good movie Australian voice.

The movie sticks to monuments and other timeless subjects. The movie is somewhat relevant even today.

There are three DVDs, 1) Provence and Auvergne, 2) Champagne and Cognac, and 3) French Gourmet Trip. It's amazing, but they managed to make Provence look somewhat unappetizing and Auvergne look really beautiful. In reality, it is exactly the opposite.

They do not include any information about accommodations, restaurants, or transportation. The film is mostly panning views of monuments and landscapes, and people walking around doing normal living things (buying groceries, playing games, talking, eating, etc.). The film techniques used are the worst of the worst from the late 90's - mindless and constant panning and zooming. The music is all royalty free music, the worst of elevator music.

The only way this set works is if you play it on a very small portable DVD player, turn off the sound, and listen to some lovely music. It could be worthwhile if all you want to know about are monuments.
