Splintered: Critical Race Theory and the Progressive War on Truth Hardcover – April 19, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
The problem with our nation’s schools today is not just the low test scores in basic reading and math—which are an obstacle for the economy, not to mention students’ futures. The challenge is that K-12 instruction has been hijacked by Critical Theorists who are “skeptical” of representative government and the freedoms we cherish.
The debates over the retelling of America’s past, on display in local school board meetings as well as conflicts between the New York Times’ 1619 Project and President Donald Trump’s 1776 Commission, involve not just historical facts, but how Americans define their nation. This battle over our national identity is a cultural battle, involving schools—cultural institutions—and the ideas we all need to share to get along with our neighbors, raise families, and pursue the American Dream.
“Jonathan Butcher is one of our sharpest and most insightful analysts writing about education today. The nation owes him a debt of gratitude for work demystifying an obscure academic field, critical race theory, and fearlessly following where it leads when imposed on our public schools: abandoning the cherished belief that education can be a means of uniting our diverse country and replacing it with a pedagogy of grievance and despair.” —Robert Pondiscio, Senior Fellow, American Enterprise Institute and author of How the Other Half Learns
“Jonathan Butcher’s timely book on critical race theory addresses what I have described as the civil rights issue of our times. Too few Americans understand how this dangerous ideology and how it has seeped down into our K-12 educational system. Butcher’s book is part of a collective effort to educate the American people about the infiltration and indoctrination of our educational system.” —Dr. Carol M. Swain, a former tenured professor at Vanderbilt and Princeton Universities

As a US History teacher for over a decade I have seen this coming since 2008 when I was in a Social Studies Education program at a major university. Now it is nearly unstoppable unless more people read books like this and understand just what is happening before it’s too late.
This book gives multiple examples of inroads CRT is making, explains how CRT goes counter to American life and education as America has progressed for more than 200 years, and makes suggestions of how to combat the insidious reach of this Marxist theory.
I would recommend this book to school staff and parents.
The description of critical race theory (CRT) and its associated problems are presented in easily understood language. In addition there are numerous examples taken from recent events and loads of footnotes for anyone interested in further research of this subject. Butcher posits a "civil" race theory to replace critical race theory and presents good arguments for not banning the discussion of CRT in schools.
The problem is that statements like "Critical race theory has hijacked the U.S. education system on every level" are simply untrue. CRT is a niche discipline that simply *is not* being "taught" to K-12 students, no matter how often certain alarmist conservatives insist that it is.
If Mr. Butcher wants his curriculum objections to be taken seriously, he would do better to state them clearly and truthfully rather than labeling them as CRT. Labelling any discussion of race or racism "CRT" exposes a basic ignorance of the topic that makes the entire premise irrevocably flawed.
Unfortunately, it also predisposes a careful reader toward wondering why exactly Mr. Butcher is SO hypersensitive to any acknowledgement that there is some fundamental racism in parts of our society — by which I mean, as much as I hate to say it, the book does kind of end up making Mr. Butcher sound like the racist his critics accuse him of being.
Overall, this is just not a cogent, solidly crafted argument, and I can't recommend the book.
