Music creates the setting and influences the characters. Kahn's descriptions of her surroundings are always at the forefront, whether in real time or in her visions of past lives.
The novel is rich in description, symbolism, and synchronicity. The two story lines--present day and past life exploration--eventually meld together as Jebby continues her journey in search of talented musicians and soul-lifting music.
I recommend reading this book if you are willing to transport yourself into an adventure beyond what can be seen right in front of you. Kahn knows her music and her setting, and she combines it all with a creative touch in her writing. I loved the story and the lyrical prose. I've already downloaded her latest release, Obsession of the Heart.
Several times I thought about the Rig Veda while reading this book. Particularly the portion that says 'I move with the infinite in Nature's power'.
A powerful, poignant and moving book that provides the reader with beautiful glimpses into two locations a world apart. The author provides a double shot of espresso at the end.....I guarantee that you will feel like one of the whirling dervishes after reading those two passages.
For me (please allow a little poetic justice), I must compare this novel to a tremolo....albeit a slow one and not rapid, as normal. It sounds one note from the metropoleis of the Silk Road and the second from the Hopi community in the Southwestern part of the US.
Another truly excellent read from Ms. Kahn. Most highly recommended.
The resonating narrative voice is reminiscent of a "stream of consciousness" voice. As it crossed through time and global space, the voice wound its delightful way far beyond the traditional definition of "stream of consciousness."
The work reminded me of one of my dear grandmother's quilts. When I was a little girl, my grandmother told me stories about each colorful square of the quilt. "This pink square with white flowers came from the dress your aunt wore her first day of school." Each square represented its own story, meshed into the beautiful whole. As Jebby's consciousness flashes back and forth from present to past, the scenes are intermeshed like the squares of colorful fabric. The "flashbacks within the flashbacks," the wonderful visions which take us into another culture and time, and her travels across the world are all crafted together to form the amazing quilt of this masterpiece.
The author took on a panoramic project with her book. She did a magnificent job. While Jebby and Dodi learned about each other, I also learned more about other cultures and ways of thinking. At the same time, the writing style was lyrical, entertaining, and brought together images, sounds, flavors, and sensations.
The book even encompasses humor, particularly about the harvesting of "guano," which is bird droppings! The entertaining and unexpected puns made me laugh out loud with Jebby and Dodi.
I highly recommend the book.
The author is to be commended on how beautifully written her novel is. She weaves the story from present to past and back effortlessly. Without giving away any of the story--which is truly riveting--I was fascinated by some of the history that gives, perhaps new(?) information about the Native Americans. It is contemporary, historical, educational and captivating, with amazing musical artistry, a love story, and a hint of mysticism that will open your mind, with unique characters and set in international locations. This novel has elegance and is a page turner at the same time. What more could you want from a great book!? Denise Kahn is my new favorite author. I will get everything she has written and of course all the books in the future. Hopefully more soon. Well done!
