We have tons of Christmas DVDs but how could we possibly have ever celebrated Christmas without SpongeBob Squarepants?!

This new DVD featuring SpongeBob and friends is not your typical SpongeBob. While it says animated it is more like fuzzy claymation. Like the old Rudolph the Red Nosed reindeer movie or Frosty the Snowman. It is one episode of SpongeBob that is all about Christmas. Plankton wants to of course steal the Krabby Patty formula and he does it by ruining Christmas for everyone. He puts jerktonium in fruit cakes and gets everyone in Bikini Bottom to eat them and everyone turns into a jerk. SpongeBob saves the day by having a big heart and caring.

Overall, I let my boys (4 and 5) watch this DVD. They laughed and the lesson they learned is to be nice to everyone and get in the holiday spirit. They thought the strange animation was fun too and it was a nice change of scenery. I will say the one weird thing of the DVD though was there was a preview for the new Katie Perry movie in the previews and it doesn't seem like it is the most appropriate for young SpongeBob fans. This is a short DVD too (just 22 minutes) so its quick to watch and then watch again.

Before I delve too far into details on the animation let me give an overall description so you know what to expect. This is a 22 minute SpongeBob Xmas special with songs scattered throughout it that has a recurring theme of not being a jerk during the holidays. The word "jerk" is constantly used and there is even a song about not being a jerk, so if you don't like the word "jerk" don't jerk your money out to jerk this movie into your player and let it jerk about on your television. This was made in a form of animation called stop-motion, which is different from the show which is done in 2d animation. The story is about Plankton trying to get the Krabby patty secret formula and Bikini Bottom falling into chaos in the process. SpongeBob's innocent love of the holidays saves the day. Now to get into details...

The entire special is done in stop-motion animation. You can compare the style to Rudolph by Rankin Bass and Nightmare Before Christmas by Henry Selick, but it is not claymation like Wallace and Gromit or Gumby, which are claymation (as many other reviewers seem to believe this is). So the reviewer who said this is not all claymation, they are right, but it is most definitely completely animated in stop motion. All the characters were built as puppets to represent the original show, but they will not look exactly the same. SpongeBob and Plankton are made out of foam, Patrick has a wooly fabric, and Squidward is a smooth shiny fabric. My point is everything is very textural. Every character was hand made from scratch and animated one frame at a time, just like in hand drawn animation, but everything is tangible.

WOW!! I was so impressed by the show and just how good the characters made the leap to real life. This was such a needed jolt to
the spongebob franchise. The characters are so charming to see in Claymation style.

My boys looooooooove this movie!! They watch it almost every day during Christmas and still laugh every time. It's really funny and entertaining and I enjoy watching it myself. It's very well made and has a cute story line. It does say the word "jerk" ALOOOOOT so if you don't want your kids to hear/learn that work, you may not want to get it. Overall, it's a really great movie to add to your Christmas collection.

I order this off of Amazon Prime Instant Video. This SpongeBob mini movie is a bit different, it's more of a claymation and not a cartoon. My boys liked the change from the regular SpongBob cartoon, it kept them interested in it.

I wasn't a huge fan of the Squidward's "don't be a jerk" song in this. I try not to use words like that in my house and there goes SpongeBob teaching them. Every time I encounter something like that in a cartoon I explain to my children why we shouldn't use words like that and that it's just a fake cartoon and not real life. I know SpongBob is for 7+ but they really don't need to say some of the stuff they do. I don't like my 7 year old using words like jerk or tubby, both which have been featured on SpongeBob cartoons.

Either way with some parental guidance it's a very entertaining little mini movie about SpongBob's Christmas!

Thank you for reading my review, I hope you found it helpful.

The stop-motion animation breathes new life into this franchise. You'll be amazed at how well the animators were able to capture these beloved characters in this format. There's also a sense of wonderment as they keep doing the stop-motion animation with each new character/locale in Bikini Bottom. This one is highly recommended!

My children love Spongebob. So when i saw this, I knew they would love it for a Christmas gift. So as I thought, they wore this DVD out around Christmas time. Its put away now, but I'm sure my 4 year old would still watch it anytime of the year. They loved this movie, because it was a claymation type movie and not animated. Something different from spongebob, they are not use too. I suggest this as a gift to anyone that loves that pineapple under the sea!
