From the Back Cover

Pull up a chair or gather round the campfire and get ready for thirty creepy tales of ghostly in the, eerie happenings, and other strange occurrences from times past. Set in remote towns in the Allegheny Mountains, on rustic farmlands in Pennsylvania Dutch country, and inthe dark streets and hallways of Philadelphia, the stories in this entertaining and compelling collection will have you looking over your shoulder again and again.
Pennsylvania folklore traditions are kept alive in these expert retellings by master storyteller S. E. Schlosser and in artist Paul Hoffman's evocative illustrations. You'll meet ghosts and witches hear things that go bump in the night, and feel an icy wind on the back of your neck on a warm summer evening. Whether read around the campfire on a dark and stormy night or from the backseat of the family van on the way to grandma's, this is a collection to treasure.

About the Author

Author S.E. Schlosser has been telling stories since she was a child, when games of "let's pretend" quickly built themselves into full-length stories. A graduate of the Institute of Children's Literature and Rutgers University, she also created and maintains the Web site AmericanFolklore.net, where she shares a wealth of stories from all fifty states, some dating back to the origins of America. She is the author of six other books in the Spooky series.

Artist Paul Hoffman studied painting and printmaking, completing his first extensive illustration work on assignment in Egypt, drawing ancient wall reliefs for the University of Chicago. His work graces books of many genres―children's titles, textbooks, short story collections, natural history volumes, and numerous cookbooks. For the Spooky series, he employs a scratchboard technique and an active imagination.

S. E. Schlosser has put together another book of great folklore stories. For those who like history there are three stories about real people, George Washington, Ben Franklin and Edgar Allen Poe. For those who like truly scary stories there are Axe Murder Hollow and Bloody Mary. Overall the book captures Pennsylvania's folklore in a compelling manner. Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Lancaster County are some of the settings for these folk tales. There are stories about coal mines, steel mills and many other features that make Pennsylvania unique. I highly recommend this book, it's a great read.

Some fun reads here, but I find the tales somewhat long, and a little boring with minimal spooky factor. Guess it depends on the mood. Haven't found any stories in here to truly satisfy the spooky itch.

I purchased Spooky Pennsylvania thinking that it would bring a bigger and more unique approach to the spooky series than other previous books I have read, but in this one I felt a little disappointed. There were very few actual scary stories. The ones I found genuinely scary were Axe Murder Hollow, Bloody Mary, Room For One More, The Goblin and The Storm Hag. Everything else is either historical or very boring. If you are a huge fan of the state of Pennsylvania and believe that this would make a great part of your book collection, purchase it, but if your not really interested in Pennsylvania folklore don't buy it.

Great stories from my home state -- very thought provoking and entertaining! Highly recommended for use with upper elementary and middle school children in PA.
