I like the narrative style, and though I have a few quibbling grumps about the writing itself, it's nothing that would keep me from reading further, and it may be more a reflection of my own pickiness than actual flaws in the prose.
The only thing that kept me from rating this five stars is that this excerpt doesn't seem to have a plot hook. It is an interesting vignette into the life of an abnormal girl, and while I'm sure there are a thousand interesting places this story could go from here, I would have liked to see at least an inkling of that direction in the opening pages.
Not only does Violet see dead people, she embraces her gift! She also has a pet poltergeist named Buster, and they share the cramped apartment above her father's funeral home. After her mother's mysterious demise, she was forced to live with her less-than-supportive Aunt Thelma. Now that she's back at home with her dad and prepared (sort of) to start a new school year in a brand new school, she's just about ready to own all that makes her unique. "After all, if you're going to be a freak, you might was well really be a FREAK, right?"
Normal is boring.
I'm dying to know how that works out for her, and if she'll be able to solve the mystery surrounding her mother's death.
I'd keep reading to see if her mother ever shows up.
I'm really looking forward to seeing more of this book! It's fantastic so far, and I can't wait to see what the plot (and Buster!) have in store.
CONGRATULATIONS! I was happy to lose to such a worthy competitor AND will be ordering my copy of the book. :-)
