Went to Big 5 Sporting Goods and bought one. It works perfectly.
Anyway, scientists from the Dept. of Family Medicine conducted a meta-analysis of PBWI's which means that they not only searched six electronic databases for weight loss outcomes in nine different studies that compared the pedometered with the pedometerless to see who lost the most weight, but they also contacted real-life pedometer experts just in from field interventions to interpret the results. Their conclusion?
"Pedometer-based walking programs result in a modest amount of weight loss. Longer programs lead to more weight loss than shorter programs."
So that said--modest amount of weight, the longer the program the better--just which pedometer to use? Any model that motivates the movement and doesn't zero out unpredictably thus making the walker want to walk right into a coffee shop and have a caramel latte and a sweet roll out of frustration. This model is good enough provided you don't flip it upside down in an effort to read it while still clipped to your waistband. It WILL lose your step count under these circumstances. Also, careful when you yank down your pants to 'do your business'; the pedometer may jump ship for shore..er I mean floor.
UPDATE - I HAVE CHANGED MY OPINION TO A 2 STAR RATING. THERE IS NO ON/OFF SWITCH ON THE PEDOMETER SO YOU WILL BLOW THROUGH BATTERIES ON THIS PEDOMETER WHICH SORT OF OFF SETS THE COST SAVINGS ON BUYING AN INEXPENSIVE PRODUCT.
