So, I purchased a Teton Sports Grand 5500 Backpack for me. I LOVE this backpack. You can tell that a lot of time went in to the design of this pack. My hat is off to whoever is behind the design. The things that stand out most to me on this pack are the quality and the attention to detail.
I love the space in the Grand 5500 backpack, so I can easily fit in what I need. It always seemed like I needed more space in the past. This pack definitely provides that. I like that the sleeping bag compartment is larger than other backpacks I have, so I can much more easily fit a high-quality sleeping bag, air mattress, blanket, pillow, etc. into that compartment. With other packs I've had, most of that stuff has to go on the outside of the pack, and then it gets dirty and clumsily bumps into things. Plus, with the Grand 5500, that gear is much more effectively protected from the elements than just being tied to the outside of a smaller pack. If you do need to put something on the outside of these packs, they have many higher-quality loops, ties and compression straps that don't look like they are going to tear off. If you are a minimalist, less-is-more type of backpacker, then this pack may have too much space for you. If you like to have room to pack and protect the things you really want to make your backpacking trip amazing and comfortable, then you should seriously look at this pack. Have you ever had to ask yourself "Do I really need an air mattress?" or "Do I really need a pillow?" I have, seriously, because the other packs I had were so small. With this pack, you don't have to make those kinds of decisions. And, with the compression straps, you can make the bag smaller at times you don't need all the space.
I really like how the back panels and the torso width are adjustable so they can be highly customized to me. I've never had that luxury before. I love the extensive padding in the lumbar area.
I like the detachable bag for toiletries or other items to which you need quick access. I like the attached poncho/tarp for each of the packs. They not only keep the pack dry in case of rain, but can also be used to create a shelter in a wilderness survival situation. They are bright orange and would make it easy for someone to find you in an emergency.
I love that Teton Sports offers a great warranty and stands behind their products. Although, I have a lot of Teton Sports products, and I've never needed to use the warranty.
I guess I'm just passionate about Teton Sports, and trust the brand and products because of how their products have performed for me. I actually look for their products now and preference those over competitors. In short, Teton Sports provides fabulous quality at a fabulous price.
The sleeping bag compartment has a nice size. I have a double mammoth that definitely wont fit in the compartment. Its for singles sleeping bags. Plenty of pressure straps throughout the sides, top and bottom of the bag. A couple of handy rings along the waistbelt for knives you can clip to. Poncho was stored on top pocket of the bag . It looks very well padded. Hope this bag lasts, not like my last 70L Jansport..top hood clip strap ripped. No more Jansports for me. I went with the Teton because i own a double mammoth sleeping bag and it is AWESOME. I also got some TETON pillows that feel great and are perfect for camping.
While being light, the Grand 5500 has several organizational features that I love. First, I love the wishbone waist belt, helping the pack rest right over the hips. This comes in handy if this large backpack is fully loaded. I also love the zippered pouch on the waist belt, giving me easy access to small things I want accessible on a trip, like a camera or energy bars. I also like that the side mesh pockets are very large - so they can easily hold larger items I want easy access to, like a Nalgene bottle, water filter, snacks, or sunscreen. The removable daypack is very handy. While not a very large daypack, (it can hold a water purifier and a few snacks), I love using it to carry toiletries (since I use contacts, this is especially useful). NOTE: know that this is a minimalist backpack designed to be lightweight. To save weight there aren’t a lot of pockets or internal organization.
Another key feature I like about this backpack is that the torso height is adjusted by an adjustable strap, rather than by a velcro and horizontal webbing system many packs use. This lightens the pack, and also makes it simpler to adjust the pack’s torso height to fit you perfectly.
Since this backpack is designed for intense, multi-day trips, it would need to be designed to carry technical gear. The Grand 5500 has four features I’ve found which do just that--without adding a lot of weight. First, the two neoprene sleeves are a great lightweight way to protect and carry ropes, meaning you can ditch the rope bag and save a couple pounds. Second, using the included poncho as a rope tarp is another weight-saving feature. Third, the gear loop straps, as well as the many other clips, give you multiple options for strapping down larger gear, like hiking poles, skis, or sleeping pads. Fourth, (my personal favorite) are the four gear loops inside the main compartment of the backpack to hang quickdraws, anchor systems, cordelette, or other technical gear - accessing this gear is made easy by the upside down U zipper on the back as well as a side access zipper--meaning you don’t need to go through your whole pack to get to your technical gear in the moment you need it most.
With all that being said, I highly enjoy my Grand 5500 and plan on recommending it to friends looking for a lightweight pack for multi-day or technical adventures.
