She has been walking on a leash since she was 2 months.
As she grew older and stronger controlling the walk became more
and more work. Slip leashes or traditional choke chains were not doing the job.
For the most part she is very well behaved, however when a smell
catches her attention she will jerk away from our stride to try and check it out.
I saw this type of a collar used by Cesar on "The dog whisperer" for dogs that need to have their tugging corrected.
Since purchasing this Sprenger collar her behavior is nearly perfect during our nightly walks.
While it looks a bit like a mid age torture device it's not. It simply distributes the force in a more productive way. Previously she
would be wheezing and gagging with the other collars, now the Sprenger there is none of that. It's a very high quality product made in Germany.
I purchased a size that she can grow into as the link's are removable, or more can be purchased then added.
The Sprenger was the only thing that kept him walking with us instead of against us. He actually loves it! If I take this collar out he'll run at me and wait to get it put on. If I use his flat collar, or even his fleece-lined padded harness, he runs away! He doesn't mind it at all. You can try it on yourself like I did, the prongs are very smooth.
Well as it turned out, he's 2.5 year old now and 90 pounds, so we went from the 3mm to the 3.8. His neck alone just behind the ears was 19 inches and his fit perfectly, though we did remove one link to make sure he couldn't pull it over his head. I'm very pleased, and this matches his size much better. I also love this collar because it stays on his neck. Samoyeds have an incredible ruff around their head and neck, and other collars tended to either discolor his fur, or sit on top of everything, allowing him to pull out easily. It's a great design and fantastic quality. Avoid those cheap prong collars and get one of these!
Maybe I'm missing something, let me know if there's a way to adjust it better. The loose setting still controls her well, but I would prefer for the collar to stay near the base of her skull.
After getting this collar, I am very confident that it won't pop off. It stays in place a little better than the regular pinch collar, because the prongs face in both ways. However our dog always shakes his head and the collar slides down his neck a bit. Cane corso's have very thick necks so it's hard to find one that stays up top. Each prong is very large and it's already just tight enough so I cannot add or remove another link.
I think the thickness of it makes it a little harder to correct him after he shakes his head and it goes to the base of his neck. When it is up at the top of his neck he really respects it. I might try one size down just because the prongs are so thick that it's a little hard to correct him, but this collar does exactly what I need it to so I'd recommend it to anyone with a giant dog.
