The story follows a young sea captain named Jason -- in command of his father's ship -- who is determined to prove himself on a sealing expedition. But when the ship arrives at their island destination, thick with ice and heavily populated by seals, the story quickly spirals into so much more. Jason must discover what happened on this island 30 years ago, how those events relate to the almost ethereal woman who protects the seals, and how his father -- now bedridden with sickness -- was involved. It's a journey that pits him against his crew and the inhabitants of this remote place, where snow flurries are sudden and the cold is a ruthless killer.
The story moves so quickly, yet the author spends the perfect amount of time beautifully describing the island, from the icy landscape to the activities taking place on its slippery surface. Spring Thaw is a great demonstration of how powerful the perfect description can be. By combining action and mystery in a remote locale, Sid Stebel delivers a rare novel that's energetic in its pacing, deeply moving, deftly poetic, and impossible to put down.
