Editorial Reviews

Review

"This collection...is a great illustration of how, when the appropriate subject is chosen, no one on earth can say it better than the subject himself. Impressively thorough...and highly recommended."--Dave DiMartino, RollingStone.com

"This [book] was more than a pleasant surprise. It was a mini-revelation...You really do feel like you know Bruce after you finish this book." --Mike Greenblatt, The Aquarian

"Springsteen on Springsteen shows "the reader something that a more traditional biography could not typically accomplish . . . A fun and light read [that is also] a boon to any serious Springsteen scholar."--Publishers Weekly

"What Burger achieves is . . . impressive. His introductions to each chapter are crisp and give the proper context so the reader can understand the mindset of both Springsteen and the interviewer . . . This collection tells plenty about Bruce Springsteen--the man, not the myth."--Bob D'Angelo, Tampa Tribune

"Consider this the printed equivalent of the subject's sprawling Live/1975-85 collection: pure and unfettered."--Raoul Hernandez, Austin Chronicle

"Painstakingly edited... as close as we're likely to get to a Bruce memoir anytime soon." --Susan Gordon, Biographile.com

"One of the few tomes that lets the artist speak for himself . . . Definitely worth making room for on the Boss bookshelf."--Bob Ruggiero, Houston Press

"This book does such a good job of capturing the ticking inner workings of both the man and the artist [that it] cements itself as the one Boss book you'd have to take with you to a desert island"--Peter Chianca, Blogness on the Edge of Town

"Burger has captured the heart, soul and essence of Springsteen . . . a must-buy item."--Paul Collins, The Telegraph (Nashua, N.H.)

From the Back Cover

"A remarkable journey across the arc of a singular career--sometimes harrowing, ultimately heroic, revealing a tremendous strength of character as the Boss stayed true to his ideals, even in the face of what he calls 'catastrophic success.' A great read about a genuine American hero. If you're huntry to learn about the true soul of this remarkable man, look no further: it's all here."--Paul Zollo, author of Songwriters on Songwriting

"Bruce Springsteen has been interviewed around the world on radio and television and by newspapers, fanzines, and general-interest and music magazines. Many of his most engrossing conversations are housed in this book. Fans should welcome this valuable collection. I know I do."--Harvey Kubernik, author of Canyon of Dreams: The Magic and Music of Laurel Canyon

"A great collection. The only other way to experience this much of Springsteen's 'voice' is to see him in concert."--Patrick Harbron, longtime Springsteen photographer

"Springsteen on Springsteen is a fine and necessary addition to the literature on this incredible artist, performer, and man."--singer-songwriter Elliott Murphy, from his foreword

I love this book. It is not a bio or just some quotes gathered here and there.
It is radio interviews, speeches and other interviews with Bruce. I think you have to be a Bruce fan to start with, otherwise, I don't know how interesting this material is. But, for a fan, some priceless stuff.
For example, his acceptance speech for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His SXSW Keynote address as well as other interviews that span his incredible career.
I am in no hurry to finish reading and I find I want to savor the richness of Bruce's words.
A book I will refer to over and over.
I have dozens of books about Bruce. Hands down, this rates in the top 3.
Great job.

Jeff Burger did an excellent job in establishing this collection of interviews with Bruce Springsteen. The chronological series of interviews gives you a clear notion of the thoughts and ideas of Bruce about his music and his life. I like it better than the Springsteen-biographies because here's the man himself talking to you, telling you what he thinks and feels. Gives you some idea too about how it must be for him to do all these interviews (everyone asking him again and again about his visit to Graceland..... all these interviewers repeating themselves and others!). And it's great to read that he wants to keep on performing and touring! Thank you very much, mr Burger!

The editor of this book used an interesting focus. This is it: "'Springsteen on Springsteen' is an extensive and unprecedented collection of Springsteen's spoken words over the past four decades.'"

It took over 400 pages to publish those spoken words, and I spent an entire day thoroughly enjoying them. Some were familiar; many known only by part or out of context, some never available before. This book not only included those various Springsteen spoken words, the editor provided information to put them in context. It's an excellent reference and a great read!

This book exactly what the title says: interviews, speeches and encounters--lots of them--plus articles and reviews. They aren't universally complimentary, but each gives an excellent overview of its time in the Boss' career. Whether you read it in a couple of sittings or over a few months (I read about 175 pages on a flight layover), you'll definitely notice his evolution in thought, craft, articulation and worldview--and he doesn't shy away from the tough stuff, either. As always, however, the underlying thread is that he knows that he has to work his ass off to stay true to his art, and he doesn't forget where he comes from--even when the arc takes him far away and then back full circle. Consistently solid, entertaining and satisfying, 'Springsteen on Springsteen' is much better than the Peter Ames Carlin bio. Five stars.

For those who love only the music of Bruce -- this is a good read. In the journey through his interviews, one clearly hears the words that resonate with the music that is Bruce and his merry men. However, for those who also love the man -- for his courage, righteousness, and love of the common man -- this is a GREAT read. Because to only love the music of Bruce is almost missing the point -- he is an American hero, one of a kind, and unfortunately, on the back end of one of the most spectacular careers we will ever know. My only regret is that the book reminds me of how far we have traveled with the Boss, and how limited the road ahead with him may be.

Anyone who has interest in Bruce's point of view must read this book - if you want to know what Bruce thinks about life, friends, music or family, you have to read his declarations about these subjects.

He's a huge Springsteen fan and he talks endlessly about the Bruce insights he gleaned from this book. (Kinda wish he would stop talking about it already...)
