About the Author

Anna Alter grew up with a great love for drawing, painting, and reading. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where she studied illustration. Anna is the author and illustrator of Disappearing Desmond, A Photo for Greta, and Abigail Spells. Her books have been selected as a CCBC Choice, a Bank Street College Best Children’s Book of the Year, a Junior Library Guild Selection, and a Texas 2x2 Recommended Reading Selection, and have twice been included in the Society of Illustrators Original Art Show.

Anna attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where she studied illustration. After spending several years learning the ropes at a major children's book publisher, she began submitting her own work, and has been creating books for kids ever since.

Anna's books have been selected as a CCBC Choice best book of the year, Bank Street College best book of the year, Junior Library Guild selection, Texas 2x2 Recommended Reading, and twice been included in the Society of Illustrator's Original Art Show.

In addition to writing and illustrating children's books, Anna has taught art and book making to audiences of all ages: she has worked as a preschool teacher, held art classes for grade schoolers, and taught a course on children's book illustration at the Montserrat College of Art.

Reading a chapter a night to my daughter who is six. She stays interested in the stories and how the characters will solve the problems they face. I like that the chapters are separate stories so we can easily stop after each chapter with some closure for the evening. :) Animals face simple problems such as how to plan her party and so far - solve issues with calm, considerate manners.

Summary: Henry, Violet, Emma, Wilbur, and Fernando (a mouse, chicken, squirrel, cat, and rabbit are neighbors in their apartment building. Each one gets to be the star of one of the stories in this book. Henry’s nap is disturbed by Emma’s acorn storage; Emma is determined to have the best birthday party ever; Fernando learns to express himself by dancing; Violet survives a flood; and Wilbur wants to save a community garden. Together they learn to solve their problems and be good neighbors to one another.

Pros: This is a cozy book, just right for readers who are moving into chapter books. Each chapter stands alone and has plenty of illustrations.

Cons: The chapters are a bit long for beginners.

Perfect Beginning Chapter Book

I just read the second chapter of this gentle chapter book to my four year old son tonight. This chapter involves a very elaborate birthday cake. He was wide-eyed and riveted throughout the (beautifully detailed) description of the cake...and then I turned the page and he GASPED when he saw the picture of the cake. I don't think I've ever heard him gasp before! It was honestly one of the nicest moments we've ever had reading a story together, and believe me: we have read a lot of stories. We are so excited to continue getting to know the Sprout Street gang!
