Even spy on an unsuspecting family, in the guise of a governess. Her circumstances over the years have
dwindled to very little consequence. So her and her brother lived together is a small home.
After his death, she vowed to have her revenge. She is contacted by a man who claims to know who murdered her brother. James Spencer is the target she is "spying" on. Her contact sets tasks for her to complete in regards to the family. She does this thinking that the Duke, James Spencer, is a spy for the french and also that he knows or is the person who killed her brother! She comes to realize, he is a good man and she does not find any evidence that he is anything but a gentleman, but can she trust that?
Throughout her time in this household, Vivian comes to have some feelings for the Duke. When they speak of loss, they both realize that they share the same struggles with the pain. This is a connection he can not avoid. And really does not want to. Until he suspects she has been spying on his family.
The writing in this story was very good! It caught me immediately and I did not want to put it down. The heartfelt scenes between Vivian and James were wonderfully done. They made me feel for them as though I knew them.
Filled with lies, spies, intrigue, and danger, our hero takes his job very seriously. His job is to protect those around him and he feels he needs to protect Vivian. He feels a very strong connection to her because of their shared grief.
I loved the Hero and Heroine. Both strong, intelligent, thoughtful people, who put others interests before themselves. This is a very wonderful start to a new series that I will not be missing! I think anyone who enjoys a romance sprinkled with some witty banter and a bit of intrigue will love this book!
I can not wait for the next book in the series!
James Spencer, the Duke of Abermont had a big secret. He is the head of a spy agency. He is also grieving for his sister, who died as a result of a mission he sent her on so he also feels responsible. Vivian Loren, governess for the duke' s young brother also has a big secret, she is spying on the Duke. However, she is not a trained spy, but is spying in order to get information on who killed her brother. She also feels guilty, thinking she was responsible for his death.
So two grieving people come together with mutual understanding of what the other feels. The story becomes more complex as Vivian realizes the person who sent her to Abermont is also the person who killed her brother putting her in danger. She confesses everything to James who will do anything to protect her, even marry her. To find out the rest of the story, you must read the book since I don't like to write spoiler reviews. The storyline was fast paced, a real peace turner and definitely worth the time to read.
I have read several of Erica Monroe's books, and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series. I am hoping one of them features Ellie and Richard, I got the distinct impression there is something between them, at least from Richard's viewpoint.
I like the thought that author would incorporated that the Lion would take a child off the streets of London and make it a ward and that a governess would become a Duchess. I don't think such things did happen, however, I don't know but it was a great part of the novel to see tenderness given on a lower class.
This is the first novel I have read from this author and I look forward to reading more from her in this series. I am much into historical romance and do pick up information that I can research.
Thank you for a great novel!
