Product Description

Product Description

Spyderco named this knife after its principal job function, to Assist. The Assist was designed for emergency/fire/rescue professionals (and for the well-equipped civilian) who rely on their knives to function flawlessly under pressure. Even with twenty-five years experience in making rescue knives, Spyderco is still offering new high-tech features and the Assist model showcases the latest and greatest in this knife genre. The VG-10 patented blunt-tipped blade is a toothy eighty-percent SpyderEdged for aggressively cutting seatbelts and fibrous material. The last inch of the tip we've left PlainEdge for detailed cutting (think sharpening pencils). Perched above the Round Hole, a Cobra Hood positions the thumb directly over the hole for quick blade deployment, then doubles as a leveraging platform for the thumb. The wavy pattern cut from the top of the blade (created by a fireman from Sweden) and along the inside of the handle let you place a piece of rope (between the half-open blade and handle) and scissor the blade shut- especially convenient for cutting rope in-and-around flesh without having to fully open/expose the knife's blade. The FRN handle is a molded wonder of Bi-Directional textured contours and bulges that ergonomically wrap around your palm. In the closed position, squeeze the blade deeper into the handle and a retractable carbide tip protrudes out from the base for breaking glass. Outlined in safety orange on the handle's spine is a shrill and attention-pitched survival whistle. Carries left/right handed, tip-up by means of a tension wire clip.

The compact folding emergency knife has a contoured, ergonomic handle that practically disappears into the palm of your hand.
The Assist, from innovative cutlery company Spyderco, was purpose-built for emergency, fire, and rescue professionals -- and well-equipped civilians -- who rely on their knives to function in unexpected, high-pressure situations. A patented, blunt-tipped blade made of practically indestructible VG-10 material has a toothed SpyderEdged surface over most of the edge for rapid slicing of seat belts and other fibrous material in emergency situations. The remaining blade surface has a PlainEdge finish for detailed cutting work.

The unique Cobra Hood positions your thumb above the protruding, articulated round hole for rapid opening of the blade, and also serves as a leveraging platform once the blade is open. A wavy, die-cut pattern along the blunt side of the blade and inside of the handle was specially designed by a Swedish firefighter, and enables you to quickly cut rope or other lines by squeezing the handle and blade together, without fully opening the blade. The durable handle is made of FRN material, molded with bi-directional textured contours designed to ergonomically wrap around your palm.

In the closed position, you can also squeeze the blade into the handle past its natural resting point, causing a retractable carbide tip to extend from the base of the handle for breaking glass. Finally, the ambidextrous knife has a survival whistle outlined in safety orange along the spine of the handle.

About Spyderco
Thinking beyond established knife industry practices has allowed Spyderco to introduce new innovations, including one-hand opening, serrations on a folder, and a clip to attach a knife to a pocket. Spyderco remains dedicated to researching and developing improved, better-performing materials with function and reliability, and its unique cutlery line is a result of designing ergonomic, functional tools. The company puts its new products through rigorous testing prior to release, examining edge retention with a CATRA machine, looking for rust development with Q-FOG, checking the force needed to open and close a knife, and analyzing numerous other technical details.

This is another solid knife from Spyderco. It is designed as a safety/utility tool and as such it shines. However, there are flaws.

Pros:
(1) The serrated edge, designed mainly to cut through seat belts, works beautifully. I have tried it on thick Army Pistol Belt, parachute harness, manila ropes, rapelling ropes and it cuts like a buzz saw. This is not a surprise since Spyderco is famed for its serrated edge. For the law enforcement community this knife is also very useful for cutting flex cuffs (it has no sharp tip and can cut flex cuffs safely without harm to the wrist).

(2) The built in safety whistle on the handle is LOUD and EFFECTIVE. It will deter vicious dogs (first hand experience) or attract attention if that is what you need (i.e. lost in the woods/mountains/deserts; call for help...). This is a very clever and USEFUL safety device that you won't find in other knives, bar none.

(3) The knife blade, handle and liner lock is solidly built as in all other Spyderco knives. This a classy product from a classy knife company.

(4) The black coating on the blade is beautiful (at least for me and my line of work), tough and scratch resistant.

(5) The knife design is big, bold, filled the hand, and just outright pretty. For the law enforcement community, this knife can be used as a "light" pry tool to search for drugs in cars, other "hiding" panels, places.

(6) The price on AMAZON is very reasonable for this beautiful, useful safety/utility cutting tool. You can't get a better price for this knife any where else. Do your research and compare price.

(7) This knife is very light. It would be very useful for backpackers, hikers, and climbers.

I am very happy with this tool. This tool is well thought out. Great for seat belts, ropes and dares is say tree limbs. I have seen (on social media) some people complaining about its performance regarding its rope cutting function. DO NOT BELIEVE THAT GARBAGE! THIS THING COULD SAW THROUGH A 20-YEAR OLD CHRISTMAS FRUITCAKE! The poor souls complaining, simply do not understand how to use the tool correctly. I have cut all kinds of rope with this tool, everything from paracord,to any old rope laying around in a barn to static climbing/repelling rope. The trick is that the rope must be stretched tightly while it is being cut. There is no magic, it is that simple. Keep the rope taunt and simply clamp down. This tool will go through it like it would a stick of warm butter. Additionally, the large opening loop makes excellent to work with for those who are wearing gloves. If I lost this tool, I would buy another one in a heartbeat.

I have purchased a number of spyderco knives over the years. They are all made with a quality standard in mind more than a price tag. Good solid blade design with a few other safety options (glass breaker and whistle). Handle was a little thicker than other models I have owned though what a beautiful blade.

This is about as good as it gets. I wouldn't even think about being on board a boat without it. This is a replacement for one that I lost overboard, but it's saved my bacon numerous times when I needed to cut a line quickly. This knife will cut through a 1" dia. Hawser in one stroke! It's expensive, but all good things are expensive. This is a true lifetime tool as long as you don't lose it.

Spydercos are excellent knives with great design, durability and blade quality. With this knife, you get an impressive rescue tool for a very affordable price. It is a thick knife, clearly designed with professionals in mind and to be handled with or without gloves. It is light for its size, but may be a bit bulky for everyday carry with anything else than casual clothing. The whistle is a gimmick and useless in my mind (I wouldn't want a knife with a blunt tip as survival knife), but the rest of the features are top-of-the-line. The Assist I has a razor-sharp thick blade and the tip is not just blunt, but nicely rounded (designed not to prick or stab, but not for prying either like the Benchmade 916, for example). This knife is unique: the clever system to expose the carbide tip isn't found on any other rescue knife, and there is no separate hook or seat belt cutter carved into the handle. Instead, what you get is a sturdy and thick handle that feels great in the hand and original wavy patterns along the blunt side of the blade and inside the handle. You are supposed to open the blade slightly and place whatever material you want to cut (seat belt, rope) and press the knife closed while ripping what you want to cut. The knife is a bit more bulky compared to other models. I have the beautiful and plain Benchmade 916, which is slimmer, but heavier and feeling a bit more like a rugged tool than the Spyderco. When you look at the details of the design and the blade, the Spyderco Assist I is definitely a thoroughly thought out rescue knife (except for the silly whistle) and very sturdy at an amazing price for this quality (the Benchmade 916 is almost twice as expensive). Another hit from Spyderco, highly recommended. There is a trend in spring-loaded, "fast opening" rescue knife, but beware!Read more ›
