The Spyderco Tuff arrived on time as usual and came with literature describing its development history and intended use. This is a large folder with a 3.75" long by 1.25" wide blade made from CPM 3V steel. Its .157" thick but because it doesnt have a swedge cut out of the spine,it appears much thicker.and the deep fuller or blood groove adds to the effect. It has a fairly high flat grind, beautiful satin finish and came very sharp.easily capable of shaving arm hair and quietly breezing thru paper despite its thickness.
The titanium frame is heavily built at about .125" thick and is riddled with spherical divots machined into the side which is mirrored by the quite grippy G-10 on other side. Not the greatest look IMO but it does cut weight a bit. There is a massive blade pivot and two large build screws. The pivot is quite smooth and the massive blade flies open once the fairly heavy blade detent is overcome. There is no blade play in any direction either while locked or while opening. The lock bar has a replaceable, hardened steel insert to engage the blade tang and locks up securely to a depth of about 30% of blade thickness and 45% lock bar thickness. It is very strong but because the lock bar is extremely short, about 25% shorter than most,it is extremely stiff and very hard to unlock.Read more ›
While I will still leave my rating 5 star, After using this knife more extensively, I will retract my declaration of this being my favorite edc. That title goes jointly to the Paramilitary 2 and Yojimbo 2. I realized that the actual cutting edge on this knife, due to the grossly oversized finger choil, is very small in contrast to the size of the knife. I found myself getting into the finger choil when cutting cardboard. Also, while the blunt tip on the knife makes it rugged and less prone to breakage, it also makes simple tasks like cutting plastic way more difficult than they have to be. It is a beautiful well made knife and it is very heavy duty and rugged, but isn't as practical for everyday use as I first thought.
