Since starting spyderco we've been told our knives are different, peculiar, even out there. All true. Thinking beyond established knife industry barriers allowed us to introduce new and Radical innovations to the knife culture including: one-hand opening, serrations on a folder and a clip to attach a knife to a pocket. We didn't go into business to rake in a mountain of dough we're here for more selfish Reasons- indulging our passion for creating knives. Spyderco is definitely out of the norm in the knife industry in our dedication to researching and developing fresh, improved and better performing materials all with function and reliability being key. Someone once said to sal glesser, spyderco's owner, "you must design in the dark because your knives look so strange." true again. Our recognizable appearance is a result of designing ergonomic functional tools rather than applying lipstick and nylons to a pocketknife. We may look curious, homely, whatever, but we'll never be called unusable or undependable. Making knives that consistently deliver reliable high-performance requires an ongoing commitment to testing.

I chose my perfect preferences of a partially serrated blade for extreme cutting power of any rough material like rope or a tomato plant, and the matching color of a black blade with additional coating.
The knife seems to be high quality, with no noticable blade play when it's in any position open, closed, in between. I like that. The materials all seem high quality.
The one-handed thumb hole opening is their signature thing, and it's okay, for me. But I'm so used to touching a flipper like on a Kershaw, or flipping a thumb stud like on a Benchmade, or a cheaper Boker offshore cheaper: Boker Plus or HK Boker, you touch it, it's open, that the Spyderco seems like a niche market with plenty of devotees. Now I have one in my collection of brands, and I'll use it as an EDC in rotation with my current favorites, a Kershaw flipper, a Benchmade Axis 551, and a SOG Flash 1 (again, barely move the thumb stud, smack! it's locked open effortlessly). I'll see if I get used to slowly opening with the thumb hole. Honestly, I've been grabbing the thumbhole and flicking the handle downward to snap it open in a fraction of a second instead of waiting for my thumb to slowly open the blade. That works much more efficiently. All my blades are over 3" and this is also 3 3/8 " blade, the perfect size for my pocket. The pocket clip is nice, but SOG wins "deep carry" hands down. You cannot see the knife with a SOG pocket clip. I've seen reviews of it that say "it's too light; it's plastic" about the SOG, but so's an M-16. My SOG has similar qualities; never broken, still operates sharply. I expect the same from the Spyderco, a high-quality looking piece of equipment.
This is one of the best and most reliable knives I've ever used. It is definitely the best value for the money of any knife I have ever had. Thank you Spyderco!
Update: I purchased this knife on July 5 2014 and immediately fell in love with it! On July 7 2015 I was traveling on highway 20 in California through the redwoods at mile marker 19. The driver took the curve a bit wide and lost control. We struck 2 trees ripping up the passenger side and under carriage of the vehicle and winding up in a slide on the drivers side. The driver a 69 year old lady was hung in her seatbelt which was causing her t o not breath, she has congestive heart failure and other physical problems. Using my Tenacious 10 I was able to cut my seatbelt loose from me and lowered myself to help her. I had to clear her spine then lift her in her seatbelt and cut it off and lower her to the door (her Dr claimed that she might have lived another 5 minutes at the most). I then managed to extract myself from the Ford Explorer through my window and down to the ground. I discovered that I was in grave trouble myself with a displaced fractured sternum. The rescue vehicles arrived and we we trying to extract the driver through the sunroof which had been sealed up with several layers of silicone. The EMT using a Kershaw blade started cutting this away and snapped the blade off. I handed over my T10 and watched hmm hack and cut at this wad of silicone and dirt expecting to buy a new knife when it was all over. He used it as a pry bar to finish popping out the window and returned my knife to my pocket, I never ever got a chance to check it out then and when I was life flighted to Santan Rosa trauma center they turned my blade over to security. A few david s later I finally got to inspect my knife and was shocked and dumbfounded to discover the blade was fixable with just a steel and damp cloth! There were a few spots that needed to be touched up but nothing that prevented it from cutting paper. The only problem that I found was the blade was slightly off center when it was in the closed position. I own and love several Kershaw blades and do not mean to dis them at all so don't get me wrong! I don't know the history of his blade or the model he was using other than it was about the same size as my Spidy.
I'm here today buying 5 more, 2 for my sons and one each for the EMT/rescue crew that that saved our bacon out there on the road, thanks guys, you deserve a great blade for the work you do!
