Well written. A quick, well-paced narrative. No unnecessary digressions or elliptical by-ways. There is more than enough flesh and blood and humanity in the main characters to sweep the reader along, and to make the reader really care about what happens to them. Along the way the story offers fascinating perspectives on Chinese espionage aimed at Western technology, and how Chinese immigrants in the US may be encouraged or forced to participate in this. This is the third book in a set of three which should definitely be read in sequence. Let’s hope the author will continue to produce books of this high quality !

Good plot, forgettable characters

Pretty good, this book moves well and there are thrills and twists and turns and suspense and spies and stuff, and for the most part it's well written.

The biggest problem, and I complained about this with the previous books, is that Mangan is just a boring nobody. Three books and I don't really have a feel for him. This outing the title character (Pearl) is a bit of a nobody too, and her parents are totally unbelievable. Really none of the characters are that meaningful or interesting except maybe Trish. Otherwise they're more like pieces the author is moving around the chessboard, but more or less cardboard cutouts.

I also couldn't for the life of me remember many of the finer details about who's who and what's what from the previous books. That's the problem with disposable spy thrillers with cardboard characters: the plots aren't memorable enough to sustain a series with one book a year.

Also these books are not set in the Cold War or Russia are bang up to date involving China and its subversions. Forget old school Le Carre with his political Axes to grind.

I've now read and enjoyed all 3 of the series and would urge anybody to read them in order, so Night Heron first then Spy Games. Spy's Daughter once again is almost a 5 star read. The tension builds steadily to a point of unbearable tension, suspicion, paranoia and mistrust and this is because Brookes portrays strong, sympathetic believable characters, relationships and situations. There are 3 main strands to this - Pearl, Patterson and Philip (all P's ?), you care about their fate and their paths eventually cross in a breathless chase from some frightening baddies. There's no Jack Reacher antics here and lots of dialogue that keeps you guessing in its cryptic opacity in a world of espionage, betrayal and uncertainty. As a reader you never feel patronised or toyed with for effect - the scenarios are realistic, the motives up to date and mainly plausible, where global political, economic and technological ambitions collide and the stakes are high. A nail biting end too, for a change. There are a few weak points - the Poons part seems a little unnecessary, Pearl "grows up" rather too quickly and it's not totally clear how the baddies are tracking their prey, although it is implied and seems to suggest they can tap into any CCTV system banking, telecom and telephone systems. Highly recommended.

For me, this is the best of the trilogy, I couldn’t put it down. In one way, I’d love there to be a fourth book, but in fact a fourth book would probably be a let-down after this one. The ending leaves a lot of possibilities for Mangan and Patterson, either separately or together, and they both seem to have finally found some sort of peace within themselves.

Just as John le Carrie evoked the tension of the Cold War, the character of the agents of that time, and the political hands manoeuvring them; so too does Adam Brookes for today's adversaries in China.
No cardboard cutouts here, the protagonists have a beautifully drawn authenticity in language that flows effortlessly and appropriately. Plot is skilfully drawn and woven into a coherent whole. And you don't want it to end!
I have read all three of the Phillip Mangan trilogy- each stands well on its own but taken as whole an achievement that vies with LeCarre at the summit of this genre. You will not be disappointed! Brilliant and unmissable.

The final book in this trilogy (or is it?) is more than just a le carre lookalile; Brooke's is his own man. Sure, their are the same political games being played in the services with all the usual characters but somehow Brooke's seems to have found his own stamping ground. Well fleshed out characters and a decent plot albeit a bit implausible at times but that does not detract from the all round readability of the book.

This is the third episode in a trilogy and I loved it as much as the previous two. Yes it's a spy novel. Yes it has some dysfunctional characters in it. But unlike many books the principal characters seem real. They are not perfect and things go wrong; a bit like real life. But what made me want to read this book was that I wanted to know what happened to the characters. Somehow Adam Brookes makes Mangan and Patterson sympathetic people that you are rooting for. I was sorry to finish!
