I use it for Hip thrusts, glute bridges, seated calf raises on the smith machine and grip holds. It is an excellent piece of equipment and highly recommended. I do a lot of Bret Contreras stuff in my workouts so it helps. I used 365lbs for Hip thrusts and it felt comfortable. I highly recommend it.
Even with this though, there are still times where I can feel the bar and the pain sets in, thats just the point of needing to push through tho. Dont force yourself to endure unneeded pains when working out, thats not required for getting in shape.
Biggest issue I have with this is the price, this is honestly a foam tube cut and shaved.
Pros: 1. It does what it's supposed to - it protects her neck and shoulders. 2. It's easy to slip on and off and seems nice and sturdy.
Cons: 1. It slips on and off a little too easy - a velcro strap or other fastener would be nice. 2. You have to make sure you've oriented the bar the right way before getting under it. 3. I can't use it, as it forces the bar into more of a low position and I prefer a high bar position.
For those who can't handle the barbell on the shoulders, this is a good pad.
This sponge is even worse that I initially thought it was going to be, I'm doing my first real workout with it, I just tested it before, and it FALLS OFF every time I slide a plate in, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere, sorry for this negative review but it does not do what it is supposed to do, anyways I may upload a video showing what I speak about.
-------------END OF EDIT-----------------
I bought this thinking it would be the answer to my back squats but as it turns out it is just as confortable to "USE" as the towel I was using before, I'ts always falling and the big opening sometimes rolls and I end up having to get out from under the bar to make sure I'm resting my back, shoulders and neck where it's supposed to be. The sponge works okay in the sense that i brings more protection to my neck that the towel did, but if I just wanted better proteccion (i want the ease of use this was supposed to provide) I would have bought just any sponge and hold it to the bar with some kind of strap, which i anyway have to use with this product as it does not stay in place..... I don't recommend this product.
It is very thick and the material very robust. It blows a cheaper Valeo type Velcro pad out of the water. There is a small neck cut out area to help keep it closer to the body. Once on the back there is no discomfort from the bar at all. Due to the thickness though, there is a bit of a disconnect with all feeling and hence, at least to me, a feeling of a lose of a bit of control. It also feels like it may slip on my back due to its large size and degree to which it lifts it off your back as it is an inch and a half thick and even compressed it is still likely 3/4" off you back. The material also is a bit smooth. I didn't like it over a shirt. I lift at home so I was able to try it shirtless and actually liked that feeling better. It may be that over time the feeling will lessen as I got used to it, but with the manta ray I feel the bar is much better "locked" into my back and I can better control the bar focus on my form and what is going on in my lower and mid body, vs. feeling like the bar is sliding at all.
The Squat Sponge and the Manta Ray are the two best options I have found for dealing with bar pain and discomfort from the squat. They are priced low enough that most lifters could try both options and use the one they prefer best. I won't squat if I didn't have the Manta Ray, so these items are more than worth their price. Given a choice I will continue to use the Manta Ray, but the sponge is the next best alternative I have found.
