Editorial Reviews

Starfish is a Maori man who survives by washing car windows at intersections on the mean streets of South Auckland, New Zealand. He's a born hustler with an extreme personality-magnetic charisma, infectious humour, and a vicious temper. SQUEEGEE BANDIT follows Starfish's struggles through nine months, three cars, two women, thirty residences, three weeks of homelessness, a hundred run-ins with the cops, one court date, a kilo of marijuana, a closet full of skeletons, finding God and the Zen of window washing.

Format: DVD
Sandour Lau has succeeded in making the particular universal. This in depth and very entertaining doco is an intimate and sometimes scary portrait of one person, a NZ Maori living rough in various parts of Auckland. He really gets into the head of this guy and what is revealed runs the gamut of emotions and talent. Lau gets up close and personal with the ongoing legacy of culture contact/racism/poverty and dare I say it for sounding cliche.... the humanity of us all. Hey, the music and graphics are great, too.

This film is an intimate portrait of a disturbed but tremendously charismatic and intelligent man. Sandor Lau takes you on a journey through the life of a man that few of us would ever get to meet or know through another context. It is both enlightening and thoroughly entertaining.

A recent screening here in Eugene was completely sold out. Highly recommended!
