Then came family, a home, etc. But I digress...
So lately, bass lines have been jumping out at me, luring me back into playing. I started researching different brands at the local music stores, here on Amazon, and on YouTube. I was very excited to find out that there was a short-scale bass. I don't know if they were available 30 years ago but I'm very glad that they exist now. I am now taking lessons and after six weeks of letting the guitar acclimate to the "weather" in the house, I took it to a luthier to have it set up. I couldn't be without the bass so I bought another one as a backup. Once I get the Candy Apple Red one back, I'll wait six weeks and then this backup Silver one will go in to be set up, too.
My music instructor said that he loves the way this bass plays, and we both love the way it sounds. This bass (both basses actually) will serve me well.
At any rate, with just a little tweaking, this bass is perfectly playable and good-sounding enough for just about any situation, right out-of-the box. I use it for folk, bluegrass, some old-time country, and a bit of swing. Running it through a 250-watt Carvin MB210 with an extension cab, totaling four ten-inch speakers, it just sounds really "right."
Please note, as a short-scale bass, this neck is shorter than a standard bass. I am primarily a six-string guitar player, but wanted a bass for recording demos and the occasional jam session. The shorter neck feels much more comfortable to me.
-Comfortable, affordable, and fun to play.
-Sounds good plugged in.
-Satin finish on the neck is very thin, smooth, and fast. This makes it easy to play. I have honestly played on $500+ instruments with necks that weren't this nice.
-The finish on mine isn't perfect. This is a very minor gripe, especially considering the price.
-The hardware is poorly plated. The tuning machines seem like the chrome plating will peel off quickly. Again, not that big of a deal at this price range.
-I'm having trouble finding a gig-bag that this fits into nicely. Guitar gig-bags are too short, and standard bass gig-bags are too long.
What are you waiting for? Buy this bass! Whether it's your first stringed instrument, or you're a guitarist looking for a bass to have around, you'll have trouble finding a better bass for your money anywhere else.
