About this item
- PREMIUM PRODUCT FOR A LIFETIME OF PEACEFUL BIRD FEEDING
- TRULY SQUIRREL-PROOF: Openings in the shroud align with the feeding ports, providing birds access to the food. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the shroud down, closing access to the ports. Squirrels and some large birds are foiled but not harmed in any way.
- PAYS FOR ITSELF IN SAVED SEED: Squirrels can no longer steal your wild bird seed. Over a short period of time this adds up to substantial savings that will pay for the purchase of your feeder.
- CARDINAL RING SYSTEM: Cardinals prefer to face their food source as they have difficulty turning their heads to feed. The custom grip profile of our patented Cardinal Ring System allows them to perch securely and feed comfortably.
- LIFETIME CARE: This is how we support you and our planet. Should you need a part covered under our warranty, we will provide it for free to extend the life of our products, and shipping is on us. The future of the planet must be linked to the vision of products made to last. Please call us for advice or help, a real person will be happy to answer.

CLEANING YOUR FEEDER
· Frequency of cleaning varies according to climate.
· Heavy bird traffic can increase the frequency of cleaning.
· Washing by Hand. Wear Gloves!
· Dismantle and discard any accumulation of wild bird food.
· Wash by hand in warm soapy water and/or in 1/10 bleach solution.
· Make sure all components are completely dry before assembling.
· Warning: Bird droppings contain contaminants. Avoid skin contact.
HOW IT WORKS
Openings in the shroud align with the feeding ports, providing birds access to the food. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the shroud down, closing access to the ports. Squirrels and some large birds are foiled but not harmed in any way.
PERCHING OPTIONS
Posi Grip Perch System
Thick, adjustable-length perches with textured surfaces provide a secure and comfortable grip for birds. Attract small birds such as Chickadees and Finches (while deterring some larger birds) by shortening the perches. Perches can also be extended just enough to attract medium-sized birds including Grosbeaks and Woodpeckers.
Cardinal Ring System
Cardinals prefer to face their food source as they have difficulty turning their heads to feed. The custom grip profile of our patented Cardinal Ring System allows them to perch
securely and feed comfortably.

WHERE TO LOCATE YOUR PLUSPosition your feeder wherever you like to get great close-up views of your favorite birds. Hang it over a window, in a tree, on a deck, from a fence, in your garden, on the side of your house, from a rain trough or over sliding doors. Use brackets, extension hooks and tree hooks to hang your feeder at the 18-inch (47 cm) recommended clearance. |
NEED FOR CLEARANCERemember it’s a squirrel’s weight that triggers the closing mechanism. If a squirrel can reach over from a nearby foothold and avoid placing its weight on the feeder, it can access the birdseed. To overcome this problem, allow for at least 18 in/47 cm of clearance around the feeder. This will force the squirrel to climb onto the feeder and trigger the closing mechanism. |
DETACHABLE COMPONENT SYSTEMSquirrel Buster Plus is designed to be dismantled by hand into individual components without the use of tools. This allows for easy cleaning and maintenance. |

This feeder comes factory set to support the weight of about 6 sparrow sized birds (3 oz.) before the ports close. The spring tension on the closure is adjustable if you want to feed larger birds. Adjustment is extremely easy. The manufacturer recommends you keep the feeder a minimum of 18" from any object a squirrel could use his back feet to hold onto, so the entire weight of the squirrel is on the feeder to activate the port closing mechanism. I ignored this recommendation on the first hanging and found my squirrels could hold onto a nearby (9" distant) pole, upside down, and grab and shake small amounts of seed out of the feeder with their front legs, defeating the mechanism. When I moved the feeder out to 12" away from the post, the squirrels couldn't stretch enough to repeat that stunt. When a squirrel is forced to put his entire weight on the feeder, the ports close from the weight and the feeder literally is "squirrel proof."
I like that the seed tube is ventilated so if moisture gets into the tube, it dries quickly and doesn't allow mold to form on the seed. The whole feeder can be easily disassembled and cleaned in a dishwasher at intervals to reduce possibility of feeder transmitted bird diseases. I don't worry a lot about bird diseases, but it's nice that the manufacturer apparently does and has designed for it.
With a vertically stacked ports feeder, a squirrel can attach his back feet to the feeder hanger and, hanging upside down, can access seed from the upper ports. With all the ports on the bottom level, such as this design, it's impossible for the squirrel to reach the ports at the bottom of the feeder. There are no anchor points on the tube (like upper port perches) that a squirrel can attach to. The manufacturer has added a couple overhanging roofs or eaves to further hinder a squirrel from reaching the ports. The lower overhanging roof helps keep snow out of the ports, which was evident during a recent snowstorm.
A certain amount of seed inevitably falls on the ground beneath the feeder. It seems to me that less seed falls to the ground from this feeder than others I've owned.
I like that the feeder comes with good user instructions and explanations of it's design features so the user understands exactly how to use it. The manufacturer also has helpful YouTube videos that demonstrate how to assemble and disassemble the feeder for cleaning, and how to adjust for weight the spring closing mechanism. This is a very expensive bird feeder, however the squirrel proof design, ventilated seed tube to prevent mold and other features will prevent wasted seed, and over time the savings on wasted seed should more than offset the higher initial price of the feeder.

It's simple to put together. It constantly attracts all kinds of backyard birds here in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. Everyday visitors: house finches (constantly), cardinals (often), blue jays (often -- when it's cold or snowy), black capped chickadees (constant), tufted tit mouse (constant), various sparrows (constant), wren (often). Occasional starlings (bullies). Mourning doves hang out on the deck below with the squirrels and sparrows, waiting for dropped seeds and looking for the handfuls that I spread nearby on the deck. I only use black oil sunflower seeds. I don't see the need to complicate life and buy various mixes. These birds ALL love the black oil sunflower. I buy jumbo 40 pound bags at Home Depot and Walmart, around $25 per bag.
I have the feeder suspended by a heavy gauge wire (like a coat hanger!) from an overhead trellis beam. No squirrel can slide down that wire to the feeder, and even if it does, their weight will simply close the feeding ports. So the squirrels gave up trying to climb on it long ago. They hang out below and find plenty of seeds. And I've been training them to come to my door where they will take a nut (walnut, pecan or raw peanut in the shell) from my hand -- the squirrels are as much a joy as the birds, so just feed them and don't hate on them!
The feeder is super sturdy and it works like a charm. If you should ever have a problem with it, just call customer service and they will help you out, likely with no charge for replacement parts, should you ever need some. Shortly after I bought it, I thought that I could not fully relax the mechanism enough to close the feeding ports when a 4 ounce starling sits on a perch. It was right on the edge of closing. So customer service sent me a free replacement internal mechanism -- which, as it turns out, I have not yet needed to install.
I see no reason to use the "cardinal ring." I never have. The cardinals might prefer it to sitting on a perch, but they're OK without the ring. I recommend you don't bother with it. But you might want to test it and see what you think. I also recommend screwing in the various perches to different lengths, to make it more difficult for the starlings to eat comfortably, hehehe.
How long did it take the birds to initially "discover" this first ever feeder in my backyard? Two weeks. Do NOT worry if it seems like they'll never find it, because eventually they will.
So there you go. That's my lengthy review. I love this feeder. It's the only one I'll ever want to own. If you buy it, you'll love it, too. P.S.: it is snowing now and I'm watching a frenzy of activity all day long at the feeder. Don't forget that when it's wintertime, and ESPECIALLY when it's snowing, that the birds really depend on you for food. ENJOY!

I have bought 3 bird feeders in two years last one only lasted 3 months and it’s was over 100.00 so I went for the best and don’t regret buying it
We are saving on bird feed as there is now no waste and I’m sure this bird feeder will last for years
Although a rather costly feeder, the construction is solid, it’s easy to fill and is adjustable to allow bigger birds, if that’s what you want to attract. I was trying to prevent blackbirds from cleaning out a feeder within an hour. A few months ago, I purchased the Brome Squirrel Buster Mini; also an excellent feeder, so easy to clean, refill etc., but the blackbirds figured out how to disperse their weight by clinging one foot to the cage. This feeder does not have a cage, or anything for a bigger bird to cling to. I must have had it set incorrectly as I saw a blackbird perched on the ring the other day. I adjusted the weight, and have not seen one since. So the cost of this feeder will pay for itself in due time. A really high quality product. Very satisfied with the purchase, and will continue to buy Brome products.
We get Cardinals, Bluejays, Blackcapped Chickadees, Brown Headed Cow-Birds, Downy Woodpeckers (sometimes), American Goldfinch, House Sparrows, RedWinged Black Birds, Grackles.
I put the tension setting so that it can hold 1 medium sized Grackle. The heavier Grackles bounce up and down on the support ring and are able to get to the seeds that way. Very smart birds!
And best of all ... NO SQUIRRELS!!
The squirrels attempted to get to the seeds in the beginning, but after 1 week of trying ... they now ignore it completely. Works great! This too was funny to watch.
