2014 release from the critically acclaimed singer/songwriter. Annie Clark, better known by her stage name, St. Vincent, is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She began her music career as a member of The Polyphonic Spree and was also part of Sufjan Stevens' touring band before forming her own band in 2006. Her debut album was Marry Me, and was followed by Actor (2009). Her third album Strange Mercy was released on September 13, 2011. Clark has opened shows for such acts as Television, Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Jolie Holland, John Vanderslice, Death Cab for Cutie and Grizzly Bear.

Annie Clark hit one out of the ballpark with the self titled St. Vincent.

I have all of St. Vincents albums and they all have their strong points. But her newest CD reminds me of albums from the old days where everything on the album was palatable, or simply amazing. There is no filler here, you get your moneys worth and then some.
I also recommend going to see her live. Her shows are some of the best if not the best sounding of anything I have ever come across. She prefers to play in smaller venues that have good acoustical properties, not giant stadiums that make everyone sound bleh (Rush is the only band I have ever seen in a large stadium that sounded good...err great).

If you like St. Vincent, you are going to adore this album. It's my favorite by far!

St Vincent had the good fortune to steal the scene performing Marrow on Austin City Limits, the funky multi-instrumentalist number that had us toe tapping and feeling a rush of wake in the absence of Talking Heads when their provocative art neveaux seemed to disappear. Watching Annie hunched over her guitar and hammering stacatto notes with fervor basically sent me into cardiac arrest.

She's as fun to listen to as she is to watch live. I was an instant fan after that. I got Marry Me and Actor and was eagerly anticipating St Vincent's next numbers. What followed was an impressive resume of collaborations with David Byrne, which was practically predictable, and Michael Gira of Swans, which was about as left-of-center as one could be. Collaborations send artists down one of two roads: defeat and victors.

Self-titled is victorious. It has Annie's signature blazoned on each song: provocative lyrics, impressive guitar work, great song structure and movement. It has new avenues of growth to stick the foot keenly in the mainstream: notably more synth work, and 80s-pop sensibility. However, this move does not cloy, as do so many other bands these days. While others reach to imitate the Smiths and the Cure in nearly sound-a-like avenues, Annie incorporates synths with keen attention to using them in innovative ways. The heavy moog basslines turn some songs into hits worthy of bumping on amazing car stereo systems.

Just the Right Balance in Every Way

I've always been a fan of electronic music mixed with guitar. Some bands get it right and some don't. St. Vincent definitely got it right on this album. She is a very good guitar player; she plays sort of like Prince with that clipped, bursty style. Side note: I always thought Prince was such an excellent guitar player but he wasted what could have been a stellar rock career instead opting for pop music.

Anyway, this St. Vincent album has an avaunt guard feel to it; just enough to set it apart from other indie music without going all Yoko Ono. Also the rhythms are a little 'Them Crooked Vultures' but not as over the top. (I can't listed to the entire Them Crooked Vultures CD in one sitting -- it hurts my brain.) St. Vincent does just enough here without going overboard.

Despite all these explanations, the most important thing is that good music is good music. The songs on this album are fresh and original. Each one jumps off the record like its own colorful work of art. I just love it.

Annie got her gun

It's hard to talk about St. Vincent without getting gushy or pretentious, so I'll just say this is her best album yet.

It's been fascinating hearing her sound evolve over the years - Annie Clark's been spitting clever, biting lyrics from the get-go, but musically... "Marry Me" felt carefully conceived but pleasant - maybe even polite - but each new record brought ever increasing hints of tension and uncertainty. This fully realized self-titled effort balances all elements - "St. Vincent" does abrasive and hooky equally well, somehow taking bits of new wave, funk, soul, and, well, butt rock ("Huey Newton", I'm looking at you) and cramming them into a cohesive whole. Standing "Birth In Reverse"'s clockwork auto-rock next to the measured moment of beauty that is "Prince Johnny" just makes it all the more staggering.

St. Vincent is making some of the most fascinating music around these days, and I can't wait to see what's next.

An Album Worthy of a Kanye Awards Show Outburst

I don't listen to the radio in my town, so whatever CD is in the car stereo becomes the default listening material whenever my iPod isn't around (i.e. most of the time). This album in particular has been in my dashboard for the last 6+ months and I'm more in love with it than ever. I wouldn't mind one bit if it lodged itself in there forever--settled down, built itself a home, cranked out a couple sonic babies... It's a ride or die album. If I was dating it, I'd put a ring on it.

This is St. Vincent's most accessible, pop-minded album to date, but she still retains those bursts of gooey, expletive-inducing sound that've become her trademark of sorts. The thing about her writing style on this record is every single song has a point of accessibility--a plucky groove, a hooky melody, a face-melting clusterbomb of a solo--it's easy to find something to your taste in every track.

The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is the packaging. The physical CD comes in one of those disappointing card stock folding sleeve deals instead of a hard plastic jewel case. Inconsequential in the grand scheme of things, but worth noting in the interest of full disclosure.

Bottom line: If you like the stuff Annie's done in the past, buy it. If you don't, try it anyway--it's good.
