Cons: finger print reader is terrible. My phone has a better scanner than this! I cleaned both the surface and my hands, and I was locked out for about 5 mins after a few failed attempts.
It works perfectly for my purpose, but I programmed my right thumb print only and so far it will unlock with all of my fingers and my sisters big toe. Though hilarious, I think this means this might not be the best place to protect anything important.
Yes, I'm giving this product 3 stars even thought its main purpose is crap JUST because it unlocked with someone else's toe. It was worth it just for that 10 minutes of laughter. A little disappointed it didn't unlock with my dogs paw print but I can't fault the product for that.
The safe is nicely built and heavy (almost 20lbs) , and has a recessed lid design that would make it extremely difficult, if not impossible to open with a crowbar. A thief would need a metal grinder to get this safe opened, so for home firearm security I think this level of protection is reasonable.
The safe is DOJ approved for firearm storage, and the with 4 AA batteries it requires are included. Setting up fingerprints is as easy as pushing the reset button on the underside of the door, and then putting your finger on the white scanner for 3 scans. This is different from a swipe fingerprint scanner in that you just set your finger on the panel and don't need to move it. In my experience this style is much more reliable than swipe scanners, and it's the style scanner we see a lot of current devices (phones, etc.) that have biometric security use.
The key to getting a good fingerprint scan is not to move the finger TOO far to the left and right when doing the second and third scans. Put the finger on straight, then second scan roll it just a little bit left and then roll it just a little bit right for the third scan. The safe easily registered my fingerprints and has been extremely reliable and quick to open. I found that the only way I could get it to not recognize my fingerprint then was when I tilted my finger too far forward or back when scanning.
Pro Tip: The safe can store up to 20 fingerprints. There's nothing that says you can't store the same finger twice. If you want to help with the issue above (finger being too far forward or back) follow the process above for the first scan, and then scan the same finger as a second entry and instead of shifting it left and right for scans 2 and 3, shift it forward and back. Doing this double entry provided extremely reliable scan results, in fact after doing this, it hasn't failed to recognize my fingerprint yet.
In an emergency, speed is important. The process to open is put your finger on the scanner, it wakes up and scans it, issues a beep and a green light turns on, then you can twist the knob to open the safe. I ran a number of test scenarios to see how long that entire process took, and ended up with a range from 3.04 to 5.8 seconds to have the safe completely opened (as in lid is open and I'm grabbing what is inside). 3.8 seconds was the average time that it took.
The safe does have a lockout process where if bad scans are repeated a number of times it locks you out for a short period, and then a longer period.
Another feature I like about this safe is that there is no keypad combination. Looking at other safes, with kids I would always have a little worry in the back of my mind that someone might guess the combination. When it is tied to just a key that I can secure and our fingerprints, this worry goes away.
The only negative I can think of is that the foam liner at the bottom of the safe is very thin - maybe 1/4 inch thick. If you are going to store a firearm, you might want to pick up some thicker foam padding to line the bottom with.
Overall this safe is very tough, pry resistant, DOJ approved, and the fingerprint scanner has worked far better than I ever expected.
