These are a great size. This box should hold all the tools you really need to carry around. Anything more than this, you probably need a tool chest. I saw a few metal toolboxes at the chain stores that were larger. They were just too large for a portable box.
The construction is solid, the clasp is the perfect mechanism for a toolbox. The interior tray is plastic, but don't see it as a huge issue given the price. Obviously, my Kennedy tool box is heavier gauge, better constructed, and better finished. It also cost me $185. I don't think you can beat it for the price. I am planning on buying a couple more to keep in the boat and RV.
It's going back immediately - I'll pay more and buy something decent locally. Waste of time and money. For tools I can't trust anything this shoddy. What if I pick it up by the handle, the latch lets go, and my tools go clattering across the concrete floor? Forget it....
I actually purchased two of these tool boxes. I'm rebuilding my workshop and I discovered, as I cleaned out drawers end emptied small cardboard boxes, that I have a decent assortment of both plumbing and electrical tools. I decided to organize them into tool kits and tuck the kits in a storage cabinet when not needed. My thought was that putting all these tools into kits meant I could just grab a tool box and bring all the tools I needed for either a home plumbing or electrical repair at once. Instead of my normal routine of six+ trips between job site and workshop.
I do have limited height between the cabinet shelves so the tool boxes couldn't be too high. The advertised height of these boxes were right in the size I needed. It turned out that the height advertised doesn't include allowance for the handle. The photos make it look like the handle folds into a recess on top of the tool box. In fact, the top of the box has a slight peak, and the handle sits on top of the peak adding about an extra 3/4 inch to the height when laying flat . The boxes still fit on the shelves where I wanted to keep them, but it was a tighter fit than I expected.
The tool boxes hold a lot of items. The peaked top allows for a lot of room on the pull-out tray, with plenty of storage on the bottom. And the red finish is so nice I almost hate the thought that they're eventually going to get scratched up in use. Overall, a great buy and well worth the money. Especially if i only have to make one trip for tools in the future.
And upon closer examination and a day or two of use, I will be fixing this tool box, since one of the three rivets holding the lower latch in place is missing. So I'll drill it out and buy some tiny hardware and fix it.
I would REALLY AND TRULY rather not have to fix this brand new toolbox. "Where quality control is just a word we like to use" Kind of a disappointment.
