This is an incredible value if you are looking for a simple, all steel tool box that is still made in the USA. The tool box's interior is undivided except for the accessory tray that sits on top.

The tray is plastic, though it seems sturdy enough. Somewhat surprisingly, even the tray is made in the USA. The tool box's handle is metal, though it is hollow. Despite being hollow, the handle seems strong enough. In fact, the handle alone might be reason enough to buy this tool box. Nearly every other small tool box available has resorted to using plastic handles which are much more likely to slip out when carrying a heavy load of tools. Unfortunately, that's also exactly when you can least afford to have the handle slip out. This handle is all metal, and is attached to the lid with strong welds. As noted, the hinge is a full length, piano type.

It's hard to tell this from the pictures, but the latch is the double compound type. Echoing my concerns about plastic handles breaking, a simple latch can be accidentally caught open on a pants leg, and cause you to drop all of your tools. A double compound latch has a retaining loop, so even if the latch is accidentally opened, the lid will only open a quarter of an inch or so, giving you a chance to properly latch the tool box again. A simple latch would just fly open, and drop all of your tools on the ground. This is a simple idea, but so few manufacturers are willing to pay the extra few cents for a far superior latch. I applaud Stack On for still making decisions based on quality rather than balance sheets.

The box is a bit larger than I expected, and so it cannot fit completely under the bench where my previously-owned, inferior plastic tool box used to slide. The size is not unwelcome, however, and I just had to find a new place for it. I prefer this more spacious tool box because it is easier to rummage about in to more quickly find what I'm looking for. The tray is sufficient for holding smaller tools or items, or those I use most often. Unlike my previous box, this one does not offer any other closing compartments, and so there is no place to secure loose nuts, tacks, washers, or etc. I have kept mine in their packaging or put them in small Ziplock bags and that works fine. I actually think that it may be better not to have small compartments, because those are the first things that broke on my older tool box. The clasp was the second thing to break on my old tool box, but this metal one looks sturdy and secure for a long time to come. I think the box is cool.

This is a very nice toolbox for the price. As others have stated the handle is metal and riveted to the lid, the hinge extends for the length of the box, and the tray is made of high-quality plastic. In addition there is a small loop in the clasp that allows you to lock the box with a small padlock (sort of like a suitcase). Finally, if you're concerned, the label is only a sticker that peels off easily and cleanly.

I could see this box going for $45 at a hardware store with a brand-name on it. Definitely worth the money.

I have had this toolbox for 2 1/2 years, and it has served me well. Still holding up. I bought it because I needed a toolbox that could do 3 things: hold all my essential automotive hand tools so they're in the car, where I need them; stay put and securely closed when riding about in the back of the car; and be light/portable enough to carry by the handle around a pull-it-yourself junkyard. It has filled all 3 requirements. (Although I did end up gluing a piece of old corduroy pants to the bottom for friction to help it stay in place, and I do find myself wondering about riveting on a simple latch to each end of the box to better distribute the strain when it's carried by the handle)

The handle is sufficiently wide that I can carry it around without it cutting into my hand--an extremely common design flaw on toolboxes. And the double-action latch is superb, it has saved my clumsy self from spilling a boxful of tools all over the floor--or worse, all over the muddy gravel of the junkyard.

It is also sufficiently un-flashy that nobody has broken out a window in my station wagon to steal the tools. As I live in the city, that's a real concern, and was the only reason I did not spend more $$ to get a sturdier snap-on or similar professional quality box.

In short, this toolbox box was worth every penny I paid for it.

This product is poorly manufactured, and it is shameful to brag that it is made in the USA. The hinge is attached to the lid in such a way that there is almost a 3/8" rise in the back so the lid does not seat properly on the body. This creates an "overbite" that prevents the latch from securely locking. Also the bend for the sides of the lid don't match the side at the corners, and there is a nice sized gap at a couple of the corners. Paint was also scratched off at the front corner of the box, about the size of a thumb print. I am sending this one right back.

I was looking for a metal toolbox that I could bolt behind the seat and between the roll bar on my subcompact Yanmar tractor for carrying all the wrenches, pins and clips that go with tractor implements. I looked in Lowe's and Home Depot but all I cold find were the injection molded plastic items. This box was the correct dimension to fit the space available and it was METAL. I plan to spray the interior with an under coating product to combat rattles and rusting from the tools sliding around. Works for me :-)
