About Stacy L. Eldred
Stacy Eldred searched for years to find good books and resources for her deaf/hard-of-hearing daughter Alex and her friends. After teaching sign language to toddlers and preschoolers for over 10 years, she decided it was time to create a fun, easy, instructive and interactive way for teachers and parents to teach SEE (Signing Exact English) to hearing and non-hearing children. Thus Emma and Egor were born.
It started with a single book, Emma and Egor Learn to Sign Their Shapes and Colors, which was published in 2008 and used for teaching sign language in preschools in the Louisville, Kentucky area. This was followed by 3 more books, Emma and Egor Learn to Sign Their ABC's, Emma and Egor Learn to Sign Numbers 123 and Emma and Egor Get Ready for School.
Just as Stacy was hitting her stride, her own two young children in preschool, her husband was killed and Emma and Egor languished.
Fast-forward to 2017, her young children are now teenagers, her eldest daughter is established in her career and Alex, who inspired the Emma and Egor series, is at university. This gave Stacy a bit of breathing room to dust-off her dream of making sign language available to ALL children. She found a new illustrator, Lucia Benito and created new versions of the first four books; Emma and Egor Learn to Sign Their ABC's, Emma and Egor Learn to Sign Numbers, Emma and Egor Learn to Sign Shapes and Colors and Get Ready for School and created five new books; First Words Book 1, First Words Book 2, What Day is It? What is the Weather Like Today? How Are You Feeling? with two more books under development.
Stacy has also developed a supplemental, inclusive sign language curriculum with the Emma and Egor books at its core. The Emma and Egor sign language curriculum is Simple to Learn and Easy to Teach and is designed for ALL children. Look for these books to be available in Spanish and sign very soon.
Stacy resides in Northern Virginia and had been developing her sign language skills for 20+ years. Her passion is educating and nurturing the minds of children all over the world. It is her goal to reach as many people as possible through the Emma & Egor.

Blog postClowning around on the river with Alex. Today’s drive started like so many others. Alexandra, my deaf/HOH daughter and I were riding side by side. Alex has been my co-pilot for hundreds of hours and thousands of miles, whether around town or traversing the United States.
The air was cool, the sun was shining, we were cruising with the windows down and the radio playing my favorite country station. I started singing (if you can call it that) and Alex looked at me. She saw that3 years ago Read more -
Blog post“I am so sorry.” Don’t be. The other day I was having a conversation with a new friend. I was telling him about our Emma and Egor Signed Exact English series and he asked me what my inspiration was to start writing sign language books all those years ago. I explained about my deaf/hard of hearing daughter, Alexandra and the limited learning resources we had when she was a child. He looked at me sadly and said, “I am so sorry to hear about your daughter”. I paused before replying, saying3 years ago Read more

Blog postTympanostomy, a plastic tube and a tiny incision in the eardrumAlex and Keith getting ready for her cochlear implant Alexandra had been in and out of the pediatrician’s office for 7 months with Otitis Media an infection of the middle ear infection yet she still had not had a hearing test. When I pressed the doctors about Alexandra’s lack of response to verbal cues, it was attributed to the fluid in her ears and her multitude of ear infections. Blog postToilet: Palm-out T shakes Paper: Palm-down right heel (of hand) brushes across palm-up left hand slightly to the left; repeat. by Stacy Eldred Try to remember that when you need it the most.
Imagine walking into a house and finding squares of paper stuck to almost everything, many of them only a few feet off the floor. New game? Updated décor? Inventory? Nothing so mundane, it was just my first attempt at teaching my 13-month-old daughter to communicate.

Blog postNot Quite “Normal” by Stacy EldredHappy Birthday Sunshine! Alexandra was born on the first day of Spring and has been nicknamed “Sunshine” ever since.
We had a quick and easy delivery, just seven and a half hours. Alexandra popped into this world with a smile and maintains that enthusiasm and zest for life to this day (although you wouldn’t know if from her 3rd birthday photos). For the first three weeks everything seemed “normal”. Then the ear infections started. Our lives,4 years ago Read more -

Blog postThe Single Most important Sign to Know? I Love You. by Stacy Eldred
This powerful sign shares something beautiful without a sound, just a simple hand gesture. It not only says I Love You, it says:
I am proud of you,I am here with you,Well done, andKeep your head up. Growing up, Alexandra was able to see the I Love You sign everywhere; whether she was looking out the bus window, walking up the sidewalk to school, playing amongst friends, training on t4 years ago Read more -
Blog postShocked and Overwhelmed by Stacy Eldred Learning to Communicate
Alex at 21 — you can just barely see her bionic ear. Shocked and overwhelmed. That’s how I felt when my daughter Alexandra was diagnosed with a severe / profound hearing loss. She was 13 months old, her sister Heather was 6 and I wasn’t quite 30. So began our journey — for which I was so very unprepared.
