I was looking to buy a quality, nearly full-range set of drawing instruments after years spent using old American or German pencils found by chance. As an amateur pencil aficionado of sorts, these pencils do not disappoint. They arrived on time in a quality tin without hassle. 19 pencils in total, ranging from 8B to 6H (with 2B, 4B, and 6B having two of each) gives you all the graphite variation you would ever realistically need.
-Each pencil comes pre-sharpened using an efficient method to prevent any unnecessary graphite loss or possible internal damage.
-Appearance wise, they are nearly flawless, with on a slight blemish near the black cap where a model letter and number are VERY lightly scratched or pressed on. Barely noticeable, even someone very picky wouldn't have a problem with this. Each pencil says "MADE IN GERMANY" directly on it, so you know they are not outsourced to China or Mexico, etc. The tin also has an address for Nuernberg, Germany on it.
-The pencils feel very light in the hand, yet sturdy, which makes for an interesting combination. The wood is of some of the highest quality I've been exposed to. I use a simple utility knife to sharpen these pencils, and they sharpen wonderfully. For pencils of this quality/price, I would not recommend electric sharpeners.
-The graphite truly does layer on like butter, it's the only way I can think to describe it. There is no annoying scratchiness or inconsistency on the paper, each line is smooth and takes minimal pressure to apply. The harder grades seem like they would last forever, and are excellent for lightly sketching drawings before committing to them. The softer grades go on DARK, nearly pitch black. You can smudge them if you please to create interesting effects, but that won't happen on it's own so you don't have to worry about ruining your picture by accidentally rubbing your wrist on it. Also, starting with 4B/5B and increasing to 8B, the softest grades have cores that are THICK, maximizing the amount of graphite at your disposal, which is very useful considering soft pencils use up much faster. I am unsure if this is standard, but regardless it was a pleasant surprise to see.
Final thoughts: If I had to summarize these particular pencils/brand of pencils, I would say that they are very high quality, versatile drawing tools at a very reasonable price of 1 dollar per pencil, which is less compared to similar premium brands like Mitsubishi Hi-Uni, Faber Castell, etc. They would be equally at home and appreciated in the hands of a budding artist or even a seasoned veteran. I think it's truly safe to say these pencils will satisfy nearly everyone who uses them, you really just wouldn't need anything better. They would make an excellent gift too as they come in a nice tin, which seems to give some funny "authority" to them, as well as keeps them safe from harm.
If you're looking for your FIRST quality set of drawing pencils and are considering other brands, I'd recommend these Staedtlers first based on price and range of graphite alone, because they literally will not disappoint you and will be equally as good.
I`m far from an artist, I was looking to learn a new skill and I decided on trying, if I will be able to resemble any thing with these pencils. I`m not talented in painting by any means, it took me 6h straight to contour and shade my first drawing (picture). I owe the result entirely to this great set. I`m certain that nearly anyone could achieve that or better outcome with these superb pencils.
Top grade graphite pencils. Sharpens very easily with no breakage or splitting. Darks are wonderfully dark and the lights are smooth as butter. These are in the same class as Faber Castell. People can go on for days debating which ones are better, but I love both brands and use both Faber Castell and Steadtler all the time with other various brands. But these and Faber Castell are my go to pencils for my main drawings. (Other pencil brands I own and love are...Hi Uni, Tombow, Palomino orange pencils, and Lyra Rembrandt. I also own Derwent pencils but they're so inconsistent with breaking and hard bits in the graphite, that I would not recommend them. Steadtler pencils would be one of my top choices for anyone who loves to draw.
There are 19 pencils altogether in this set which comes nicely packaged in a tin case. The pencils come in 16 degrees - soft and hard, i.e. 8B,7B,6B (2 of this), 5B, 4B (2 of this), 3B, 2B (2 of this), B, HB, F, H, 2H, 3H, 4H, 5H, 6H. All the pencils have the degree printed clearly on all sides towards the end of the pencils which makes it convenient and easy to locate when working. All the pencils are of good quality, and all have "Made in Germany" embossed on them. I have yet to be disappointed in a Staedtler product - the company makes high quality writing materials!
EXCELLENT Quality and Complete Shading Set of exquisite drawing pencils! I have bought cheaper pencils in the past. These surpass anything I've ever used. I had read reviews of many drawing pencil sets before deciding on these Staedtler pencils not only here on Amazon but of customer reviews by other artists on the web. I definitely made the right choice with this set.
These are truly authentic German pencils. Each of the shades are significant. So many sets I bought before were not distinguishable between the shades. These pencils are so smooth and lovely to work with. They achieve beautiful shades and make even a novice feel like a Van Gough. They say tools don't make the artist.... but I have to disagree. I've obtained such beautiful results with these pencils. These are truly an artist's dream to work with!!
My favorite pencils in all the world! To students I would say/proclaim do not waste your time with "student grade" pencils. Those are for kindergarteners. Instead, it is worth it for you to invest in this wonderful premier set of pencils. You deserve it as art students and nothing else will do. Take it from me, an art student. Yes, quality, size, and shape of the pencils will affect what you turn in to your art professors. Excellent quality pencils, use thereof, will inspire you to keep drawing rather than giving up when the class is over. They are worth it. I would not waste my money on "student grade" pencils. I am so thankful for these pencils!!
Excellent pencils but man-o-man was my sale deal risky. I bought a returned package for a couple dollars less and although pencils were okay the package looked like a head on collision. Unbelievable the pencils weren't broken. Junk case so had to buy a case. Wasn't a good used sale deal.
My son in law is an amazing artist and was very excited to receive these as a gift. He is a quiet guy, so hasn't raved about them or anything, but he uses them and hasn't complained. If nothing else, they were a good progression from a #2 pencil. I researched myself and these seemed like a popular item. I'll update here if I find out he hates them or favors another brand!
