Review

"An energetic, passionate voice--one that urges the faithful onward, and onward still, through brambles of history and passing modern trends, toward a Truth that is startlingly alive." --Elizabeth Scalia, Blogger at The Anchoress

"In Undset we find the consummate Catholic author, seeing life both steadily and whole, and unveiling for us its deep and ultimate meaning as we read." --Jeffrey A. Mirus, President, Trinity Communications

Stages on the Road was published in 1934, by Sigrid Undset, convert to Catholicism from Lutheranism via agnosticism, who had previously written the Nobel prize winning Kristen Lavransddatter. In it, she re-tells the lives of 5 Catholic saints or Blesseds, Ramon Lull from Spain, St. Angela Merici, Robert Southwell, s.j., Margaret Clitherow, and St. James the Apostle, with an additional "Reply to a Parish Priest." In them, Undset takes biographical details found elsewhere in more scholarly tomes, and concentrates on anecdotes which are meant to touch the mind and heart of 20th, now 21st, century seekers. Holiness is always the most attractive quality in a person, a combination of truth, good and beauty as filtered through an individual human person.

I found Undset's prose most like that of G.K. Chesterton, which is high praise indeed, in his mini-biographies of Sts. Francis Assisi and Thomas Aquinas. There is a line of wry humor on virtually every page. Thank you to Ave Maria press for reissuing this gem.

Good for both your intellectual and spiritual life.

You know Sigrid Undset as the author of Kristin Lavransdatter, but do you know her as a committed and eloquent Catholic Christian in an increasingly indifferent Scandinavia? She is warmly human but frankly focused on plain truths about us and our relationship with God.

Stages on the Road is a collection of essays by Sigrid Undset. Most are lives of saints, but there is also some polemical/philosophical/political work.

Undset's most famous novel, Kristin Lavransdatter, showed her astonishing knowledge of history and of the deepest recesses of human nature. These shine also here, but we see a new facet: her intelligence, and most of all her wit. The stories make for easy, uplifting reading. Undset tells us the stories of saints known and unknown, and writes of her era with clarity and mordant spirit.

An excellent, thought-provoking book for spiritual reading. It is interesting to note how this great European author views American spirituality.

A thoughtful, intelligent book from a fine writer and a critique on being a Catholic woman in todays' often hostile, secular world..
