From the Author

I wrote Stained during a break I'd taken from college in 2006. Unsure how to get it published, I saved it to a USB and forgot about it while I spent the next few years writing Over The Moon (TBR 2013) and Here, the first book in my Here Trilogy. In the fall of 2010, I sent out queries for Over The Moon, the first book in a romantic suspense series I'd spent three years planning. After several painful 'almosts' with New York agents, who said they loved the book but weren't sure how to market it, I stopped sending queries. I considered other careers, and when I couldn't find enthusiasm for any of them, I accepted my fate: that being a writer in today's market might mean never seeing personal or financial success. In the fall of 2011, I heard about Amazon's Kindle and decided to experiment with Stained. Since then, Stained has been downloaded more than 100,000 times and the Stained Series has spent time on numerous bestseller lists. If you're considering downloading Stained, I want to thank you for giving it a shot. I hope you enjoy it!
-Ella James

Julia finds herself homeless and alone after a fire started by a mysterious creature - who turns out to be a half-demon - burns her house to the ground, killing her foster parents. With no-where to go and no-one to turn to, Julia takes shelter in an abandoned warehouse. After being there for less than a few days a crash through the roof brings Cayne into Julia's life.

Cayne knows why the creature started the fire at Julia's house: it wanted Julia - dead. Why is the creature after Julia and what is Cayne hiding? He keeps to himself, is strong (maybe unhumanly strong), may or may not need sleep, and Julia isn't entirely certain that her choice to travel the country searching for the creature with Cayne was a good one - but what choice does she have? Cayne is the only person who can help her find out more about the creature and the only one who can protect her from it. And it may not be just her life that is in Cayne's hands, it may also be her heart...but will Cayne break it?

One of my very favourite things about Stained, by author Ella James, was the banter between the main characters - Julia and Cayne. I loved their conversations. Both characters are at times very stubborn and sarcastic which made the banter between them absolutely brilliant, especially when Julia was trying to learn more about Cayne.

Cayne is very secretive and there is mystery surrounding him as to his motivations for hunting the half-demon that destroyed Julia's world. I enjoyed how Ella James paced the revealing of Cayne's secrets. It kept me curious about Cayne throughout the novel. I never knew what I would learn about him next.

Both Julia and Cayne are very likeable characters and as a reader I loved how their relationship strengthened over time.

Stained by Ella James is a YA novel about a girl named Julia who has lived her life in the foster system. She knows nothing about her real parents, and at the start of the story, her foster parents' house is on fire and the foster parents and children inside have burned in the fire. Julia sees a demon above the house that quickly disappears. When I first read this part, it seemed like Julia didn't care very much that the family taking care of her died. I found that a bit cold. Maybe she was in shock, maybe she wasn't close to them. At this time in the story we don't know her relationship with the foster family or how long she has lived with them.

Julia runs away because she doesn't want to return to the foster system. She doesn't express any fear about seeing the demon, which I thought was curious, made me think maybe she was used to supernatural occurrences. She stays the night in a warehouse where an attractive male fighting the same demon she saw before falls through the roof. The male is close to death and at this point we learn Julia can see the auras of other people and can heal people as she heals the mysterious attractive male. I wondered at this point why the demon stopped attacking and left. If the guy was on the verge of death, why would the demon stop? The demon could have taken them both out at this point. I assumed there was a reason the demon stopped the attack, but that reason is never answered in this first book. I'll assume it gets answered in the second or third book, otherwise this is a big plot hole to me.

The two reluctantly team up using Julia as bait to try to catch the demon. The relationship development during this time is entertaining, but nothing new.

A very satisfying YA paranormal romance that keeps you at the edge of your seat with lots of fun, action and excitement going on at every unexpected turn.

Ella James created two excellent main characters that are both very strong independent people, that are each alone in the world and both searching for something or someone.

Julia has lost everything she knows and cares about and had to leave her old life behind. She is now more alone than ever and trying to figure out what her next move should be. While she's contemplating, she staying at an old warehouse when suddenly out of nowhere a handsome half-demon named Cayne falls at her feet from the roof of the warehouse. From there they become traveling companions, friends and more as they embark on a journey to find others like Julia, get answers to many unanswered questions and stop another half demon from killing Julia and others like her out there.

I am looking forward to the release of book 2 to see what other adventures Julia and Cayne get themselves into!

I want to start off by saying this book, Stained, was nothing like I expected it to was so much better. I`m going to try to tell just how much I loved this book without giving too much away....I LOVED it. It starts out with a young lady of 17 that was adopted by two wonderful people, that she truly loved, experiencing new things in life and checking them off her bucket list. When all of a sudden she smells smoke and realizes that it's her house being burned down....with her parents in it. As she tries helplessly to figure out how to save them she notices what she thinks is the Angel of Death and tries to beat him to the punch. She fails and decides to make a run for it in fear that she will have to return to the foster home. Scared, confused and heartbroken, she finds herself in a condemned building alone with her sorrow. This is when she meets Cayne....a true bad boy with a heart, but he has secrets and so does she. As they find out they both have a common enemy, they decide to team up and they begin their rollercoaster of a ride. Whilst on their journey they also find much more than either of them bargained for.
This was an exciting action packed mystery right from the beginning and is definitely going on my list of excellent stories. It has so much depth and detail that will make you think about yourself while reading....if someone starts out bad can they truly change or are they always makes for life as bad? If you want an exciting book with depth I would recommend `Stained`. It was wonderful and I couldn't put it down. I can`t wait to read the rest of this exciting series. Well done Ella James!
