ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Will politicians ever learn how gun laws work?
It was certainly not easy for Ms. Goeser to write this book, because it required her to confront all of her trauma all over again.
Suzanna Hupp and Andrew Pollack both wrote a foreword. Both have lost close loved ones in similar ways, and both have also processed their trauma in a book.
In the first three chapters, Goeser describes how her husband's murder occurred and what happened immediately afterward. It's tough reading. Ben and Nikki Goeser had been married just 16 months at the time, and they were real lovebirds. The crime occurred at a karaoke bar in Nashville, Tennessee. When the killer, who had been stalking Nikki for some time, showed up, Nikki instinctively knew that great harm was imminent. She thought of her revolver, which she had left in the car because it was illegal to carry a gun in a restaurant in Tennessee at the time. She had a gun permit for the revolver, and she practiced regularly at the range. As the drama unfolded and the killer drew his .45, there was nothing Nikki could do. It was all happening right in front of her. "Whether I could have saved Ben, I can't say, because Tennessee took that chance away from me," she said later.
Ben's killer, of course, didn't have a gun license, and he, of course, didn't abide by the law that prohibited carrying guns in restaurants.
It really is utterly inconceivable that policymakers to this day do not understand how gun laws work. Strict gun laws always affect law-abiding citizens because they abide by them. They have little or no effect against criminals because it is part of the nature of criminals to disobey laws. Why should criminals obey gun laws in particular? It is so simple and yet apparently so difficult to understand. Goeser rightly points out this truism again and again in her book.
Goeser began bringing this issue to the public's attention after the horrific event in order to spare other people a similar tragedy. That takes courage in the U.S., too, because there, too, you are immediately attacked from the left if you stand up for the right to defend yourself with a firearm. Goeser has also been interviewed by German media. Goeser says that in every question the German interviewer asked her, she could feel the disapproval of private gun ownership. She could not understand this because it is well known in the U.S. what German media in Germany has consistently concealed for decades: The German gun law of 1928 was used by the national socialists (the Nazis) from 1933 to 1938 to consistently disarm Jews and political opponents. Only after disarmament did deportation and murder take place.
Much of the book is very emotional, but that is perfectly okay, because it is a coming to terms with a personal tragedy. Here and there, interesting facts and figures from the American gun debate are also mentioned, but unfortunately always without precise indication of the source. That is a pity.
Conclusion
Stalked And Defenseless is a very readable book that shows (again) in all clarity where strict gun laws have always led and still lead today: to the disarmament of the innocent and righteous and in the last consequence to their murder.
