So, Julius decides to do something about it.
He hires Andy to live the life that the tabloids wish that Julius lived, to be his proxy "in all matters wild, licentious, libidinous, dangerous and just plain weird." As a result, Andy is treated like a celebrity himself and gets all of the perks associated with it. Julius gets the tabloids to stop following him, lots of press attention and Andy gets to live the celebrity lifestyle. With this inspired and shrewd move, hilarious hijinks ensue. :)
Andy gets into one celebrity situation after another, with legendary Hollywood parties, fights in night clubs, product endorsements, multiple sexual conquests, car chases for all of the wrong reasons and people trying to ride the coattails of Andy's celebrity to their own benefit. In all of this, we eventually see how trying this lifestyle can be for Andy, living under a constant spotlight. It helps him understand what he wants out of life and how he eventually yearns for relationships with people that are less about artifice and more about substance. Will Andy find what he's looking for?
This hilarious story was filled with scenes that consistently made me chuckle, guffaw and laugh out loud at its outrageousness and cleverness. The sardonic narrator also becomes a character in its own right, humorously describing its settings, making witty references and commenting on the zaniness of events as they transpire.
I wanted to read this story because of other works of the author that I have read. He's primarily known to me through his blog, his non-fiction works about Charles Schulz's Peanuts comic strip and his more recent foray into writing stories for the Kaboom! Studios Peanuts comic book. This story is not the G-rated fare that Peanuts is and is definitely more for adults, with more of a PG-13 rating. But it is also written with the gentle comic flair that I have come to associate with this author.
This is a well written and genuinely funny story that I completely enjoyed from beginning to end!
