I would echo some of the sentiments on this and related threads and reviews: my ring seems to be about 0.7 gram lighter than was specified (spec 8.9, actual 8.2) on the Amazon web page and, while it is called a 4mm band, it's closer to 3.8mm wide; these are probably not accidents, but I don't consider it to be a big deal. To wit, when I look at the current market price of platinum vs the amount of platinum in the ring itself, I'm seeing about 1.5x-2x the current market price of the raw material. For comparison, I have found the markups at local jewelers and your more boutique sorts of online retailers to be more like 3x-6x the cost of the raw material. This particular ring is of a well-known brand and is marked PLAT, which mark is allowed for use on made-in-the-USA platinum jewelry of 95% or greater purity. I believe I have also confirmed that this particular brand typically uses platinum alloyed with ruthenium (though I believe they could use any platinum group metal or cobalt for this purpose).
The ring is gracefully shaped, has a nice polish on it, and is stamped with the aforementioned reputable brand name along with the PLAT designator. As platinum-alloy wedding band are usually of a sturdiness that a typical structural engineer might call "seriously overdesigned," I don't really expect it to fail...I'm more interested in feeling sure that it's really made of the claimed alloy. In this case I am satisfied that the ring is what it says it is. For the price, 8% of variance in weight and 5% in width don't concern me particularly. In fact, I halfway suspect Amazon is selling by weight from returns or B-stock of various brands, though I have no really firm basis for this hunch.
Overall, a solid purchase.
It's solid platinum at a fraction of the price a local jewelry store would have charged. Platinum for the price of 14k gold.
I was concerned this was a slender, light woman's ring. Depending on what section of the description you read, it's said to be either a man's or a woman's ring. I shouldn't have worried. The ring is thick and very heavy. Everyone I show it to comments on how heavy it is.
It might be a tad larger than my other rings of the same size, but it could just be the comfort fit is more curved than my other rings making this ring feel a bit larger. Either way it fits well and feels comfortable.
I am grateful for the comfort fit; my husband opted for a pipe fit, 6 mm, in titanium (made by an artist, it is beautiful), but he's having more adaptation issues regarding ring claustrophobia. The jeweler will need to send his ring back to the artist for resizing. I plan to ask the same jeweler to resize my ring if that's what I decided to do. Fingers crossed that will be a simple process when/if the time comes.
