This edition (the first, titled Standard Structural Details for Building Construction , was published in 1968) has been expanded to some 1,900 well-drawn structural details, with all codes updated. Included are extensive chapters on wood, masonry, concrete, and steel. The details are arranged and numbered in categories with regard to their respective structural application, such as foundations, floors, roofs, walls, and other particular parts of a building. Great Book....BUT horrible Table of Contents!

I thought this book contained lots of useful structural details BUT......... rapidly accessing any detail is time consuming.

The book has a limited table of contents that basically just divides the book into large sections (Wood, Steel, Masonry, Concrete). Then, BURIED in each section are tables of figures. These tables are spread out in each section; and they are not on the table of contents!

To look something up, you have to go to the section desired (wood steel etc..), and then flip page by page to find the various tables of figures........ It's very inefficient and time consuming. I tabbed my entire book with stickies to speed up the process, but it's still a pain.

Such a shame, because the book does contain a lot of great details to help out drafters.

This is probably your least expensive option for buying a book of standard details. It's best coverage is of timber and concrete. Structural steel leaves a bit to be desired, but isn't bad if you only want bolted connections (primarily beam to beam). Extensive coverage of timber details. Would be nice to add one or two line explanations of why a particular detail would be employed. If nothing else, you can hand a photocopy of a detail to your CAD tech as a starting point.
