For me, the standouts are "Luck Be a Lady", "Autumn Leaves", "Anyone Who Knows What Love is" and "It Was a Very Good Year", but the rest are pretty good as well. I don't normally like covers albums, but this one is decent.
Still, I just wish Seal would stick with futuristic soul/funk. That's really his skill set. I wish he would take more risks within that genre. Give us a classic album to end all classic albums. I guess we'll just have to settle for "Seal" (1991), "Seal" (1994) and "Human Beings" (1998).
Here's how "Standards" compares to Seal's other works:
1991 Seal: Five Stars
1994 Seal: Five Stars
1998 Human Being: Five Stars
2001 Togetherland: (I guess we'll never know, will we?)
2003 IV: Four Stars
2007 System: Four Stars
2008 Soul: Two and a Half Stars
2010 Commitment: Three Stars
2011 Soul 2: Two Stars
2015 7: Four Stars
2017 Standards: Three and a Half Stars
Seal has stated that this was an album he really wanted to make. Now that he's made it, I look forward to the next album of original material.
It takes a very special kind of talent to be able to perform this swing era music well. I liked Seal a lot before & he has made me an ardent fan!
