Janet Dailey's characters always seem larger than life, and the cast of STANDS A CALDER MAN is no exception. Second in a series of 10 (I think) novels about the Calder family, this one is a sweeping saga about the second generation of the Calder family in Montana.
Although usually classified as a romance, the label doesn't fit. Romance readers be warned: STANDS A CALDER MAN does NOT end happily ever after. In fact, I'm still wondering why Dailey chose the ending she did. The ending is poignant and perfectly serviceable, but it's not a traditional romance-novel ending. If you want an HEA, skip this book.
By skipping it, though, you'll miss a wonderful read. Montana at the turn of the 20th Century comes to vivid life under Dailey's pen. No one, including the wealthy, is spared Nature's wrath. The way the various character factions respond is imminently "real," fascinating, and ultimately sad.
For readers and writers of historical novels set in the American west, STANDS A CALDER MAN doesn't disappoint.
that Ms. Dailey had died - her stories were so real. I am from Montana
but do not live there any more and these stories told a good story of
the ranching in Montana.
