Fact: Stanley Thermos does NOT make a quality product anymore.
Here is a review for you. Yesterday I did a side by side comparison of two Stanley Thermoses. One was purchased 20 years ago, and one purchased last year.
The Thermoses were filled with the same coffee batch at the same time (5:00 am). At exactly 12:00 pm we opened the thermoses. The one purchased 20 years ago contained piping hot, steaming coffee. The one purchased last year contained cold, not luke warm but cold, coffee.
If you would like a durable product that will last forever that is one thing. If it needs to keep a beverage hot then spend your money elsewhere. A styrofoam cup can keep a beverage hotter than a Stanley Thermos and it doesn't cost 20 bucks.
There is a REAL review.
My unit started leaking under the cap about one month after I purchased it. I bought a new cap only to find that it was a manufacture defect in the sealing area of the unit. This was nursed along by over tightening the cap until it eventually slipped a thread. After that I got into the habit of turning the unit upside down (allowing the unit to leak into the cap/cup) before opening it.
Soon after this, the spot weld area for the handle gave way. Welded in three spots, two of which clearly have paint on the originally intended upon welding surface.
Tonight the thing leaked all over my wife's lap as she merely intended to open it and that was the last straw. This thing is a TURD!
The only reason I did not give it one star is because it does have good thermal qualities.
Measured the temperature with my IR thermometer before I screwed on the stopper and lid: 189F.
At the two hour point I measured again: 168F
4 Hour mark: 158F
12 Hour: 153F
24 Hour: currently pending because I had to dump it out to make coffee-I will update
Note: I had to open the stopper completely each time to measure the temperature for about 10 seconds, so the temperature would have been affected more than using the pour-thru feature or leaving it sealed for one straight shot.
Why I bought this: I work 12 hour shifts, and with a shift rotation every 2 weeks from nights to days or vise versa. Coffee at work is $1.30 for a 8 oz cup of sad, brown water. Not a coffee snob by any means, but I know what I like in a cup. I had a smaller travelers mug which couldn't hold the temperature for longer than 4 hours, so by the time I needed it, it was lukewarm. When I saw this on amazon, I knew I wanted it. Reminds me of my childhood, where there was a stanley always parked on the passenger side floor of my dad's car. I'm guessing his was at least from the 70's. I was kind of sad when I got this and the handle and stopper where different. But I'm fine with it, both are just as functional, in fact I like the stopper better on mine.
This thing is built like a rock, without being crazy heavy. Yes, I know, built in China...does it matter? I don't think so, quality is a choice by the company, not the country. If a company cares, they can make a good product anywhere. I think this could easily outlive me. If you buy one that leaks or can't hold heat, either return it, or contact Stanley; they have a lifetime warranty, hold them to it.
