I did experience one issue that I'll describe in more detail here. It seems you have to be extremely careful because there is plastic within the hinge that supports the handle. The plastic within the handle is essential to the pot because without it, you can't support the pot and the hinge will collapse, essentially rendering the pot useless for cooking because it gets too hot to touch with your bare hands. The plastic within the hinge can melt if it is too close to the heat source or on it for too long. There was no warning about this and so it melted for me during what I consider regular use. Needless to say I was extremely disappointed because I really like this concept. So I reached out to Stanley and let them know what had happened. They were extremely quick with their response and let me know how to file a product claim. Stanley was kind enough to send me a new product that is currently on its way. I'm very excited to use it but I'll be handling it with a lot more caution than previously.
TL;DR - Excellent concept. Potential for damage if you keep the plastic pieces too close to the heat. Stanley has great customer service and I'll be recommending this product to others.
*Keeps a full thermos hot ALL day
*Great tasting coffee
*makes a lot and the double walled mug (that can be separated for two mugs) is surprisingly good at keeping a small portion of coffee hot while I slowly drink it.
*amazingly well made (except for the pot handle)
*stores everything in an amazingly compact form given all the parts and functionality.
*The pot handle is pretty weak and get's too hot to touch. If you have a full pot of coffee and want to use the handle to pour it into the thermos you'll need another hand and a hot pad so you don't burn yourself.
*might be a bit hard to push down the strainer.. but i'm new to using a french press and so i've got nothing to compare it to.
*that's it!..... other than that it's perfect!
Can't wait to use it for camping too..... (working from home today and of course.... brewed a big thermos full of great tasting coffee)
Once the plastic has melted, the handle is unusable. Without a functioning handle, the boiling pot is very tricky to pick up and pour from. Just really dangerous.
I used the system three times with no problems, heating over a small camp stove with a flame smaller than the pot Etekcity E-gear Portable Collapsible Outdoor Backpacking Gas Camping Stove Burner (Orange), which used to be 10 bucks and a good buy but now is weirdly pricey). On the fourth use, the plastic in the handle melted enough that the handle was no longer usable. I contacted Stanley and they are sending a replacement boiling pot, but the issue remains.
On the plus side:
Makes excellent coffee.
Vacuum flask keeps coffee hot for several hours.
It's fun in that James Bond gimmicky way while being truly useful.
The handle (of course).
Should have markings on the boiling pot to indicate volumes and fill line.
There's no lid for the boiling pot.
It takes some trial and error to find the right size of coffee grounds and the right fill level.
Press slowly and carefully so it doesn't spill. If it's spilling out every time, you likely need to use a coarser grind and maybe a bit less water.
When they fix the handle I'll consider this a 4.5-star set and will recommend it enthusiastically.
