It's not bad when you're cutting with it. There are three levels of retraction depending on how deep you need to cut, the slider is easy to use one-handed, the blade stays securely in place, and it's comfortable in your hand. The metal frame gives it a solid feel and it's durable.
The bad comes when changing the blades. The old ones had a separate setting on the slider for this, which served two purposes: 1) The blade was out even further so it was easier to get the new one in and 2) it was a lot harder to accidentally release the blade while cutting. On the new knife, the fully extended cutting position is also the blade replacement setting. Be sure to keep your finger away from the yellow button while cutting! The blade storage also doesn't stay closed very securely on the new knife, a problem which I never had on the old one.
Will it do the job? Yeah, but you should really buy a different brand. Stanley isn't what it used to be, and this knife is a perfect example.
1. Fully retracted (none of the blade is exposed)
2. Extended position #1 (about 1/4" of the blade exposed)
3. Extended position #2 (about 3/4" of the blade exposed)
4. Extended position #3 (about 1" of the blade exposed)
5. Blade installation position (only for removing and installing the blades; about 1 1/8" of the blade exposed)
The blade is held very securely during use. I've had other utility knives (Irwin) where the blades pull out during use rather easily. No such problem with this Stanley knife. This Stanley knife is an excellent design at an excellent price.
Ignore the negative reviews. This is a 5 star product.
1. Arrived on time.
3. Stanley name.
1. It does get tricky replacing the blade.
2. Will get stuck in the open position sometimes.
1. BUY if you are used to this type of knife.
2. DON'T buy if you are a novice and just need a basic knife.
3. YOU can pass on this if you want a reliable knife that take maybe 1 min to change the blade.
This is what my OLD knife does to load from the blade reservoir in the handle : Push knob forward and then hold the front side button down while removing the dull blade (you can rotate to the second tip and put it back in if you want at this point). THEN, release the front side button, then slide the top knob back, a new blade drops into place from the reservoir of blades in the handle, Then push the button forward again to expose the new blade. Retract when finished.

To insure I was not missing something I actually watched a couple of youtube video's and the action was smooth and easy. After disassembly and reassemble a few times and working the action several dozen times the one now works as advertised. The other one, not so much, it is still very stiff and in my opinion unsafe to try and change the blade so I just take out the two screws and do it that way. The units still get two stars for being very solid in construction an the blade lock is adequate.
