I had a bad experience with a pro-service where I paid A LOT of money for my 90k service. They installed a cheap thermostat rated to 210 degrees in my Forester 2003. The temp gauge of my car would be almost always just below the red line. I could have gone back and have them look at my car AGAIN, for the third time. Since I don't trust them anymore I bought this thermostat and installed it myself. Took me less than an hour and my engine is back to normal.
This is a great replacement for an OEM Subaru thermostat which costs around $35 at the Subaru dealership near me.

This thermostat was purchased for a 2005 Subaru WRX 2.0 Turbo.
Label on part states 172-174 degrees Fahrenheit so it's just over the 170 mark in the product description.
Will temp test prior to installation this weekend and update the review to confirm open temp and engine fit.

**UPDATED 7/8/2014**
Thermostat has been maintaining engine temps at a steady 174F since installation.
Measurements taken via OBDII sensor output.

Replaced this at the same time as a timing belt and water pump on a wrx. This is a nice part that looks to be of the same quality as the oem. Car heats up fast in the winter and holds a steady temp once up to temp.

After having had many a cheap $8 thermostat go bad in my older GM vehicle, I am glad this Stant unit going in my 2006 Subaru Outback was a substantial as it is given where it is in terms of having to change it. Did so as part of the timing belt replacement and it also came with the necessary gasket. Make sure you position it correctly in the thermostat housing as the little dribble bypass plug needs to sit in the opening in the housing in order to seat correctly.

Works fine so far. Keeps the coolant temp rock solid at about 185F. Yes this looks less "beefy" than the Subaru Outback OEM thermostat, but I've noticed that the thermostat is placed so that you don't have to remove the water pump or timing belt to replace it. If it goes bad, it is not too hard to replace. A bit more involved than some cars but easily accessible with the high clearance of the Outback.

This thermostat looks like the original Subaru part and tested to open exactly at the specified temperature. My car's temperature gauge comes up to the same point as before and the heat is good. (This part was replaced as part of a timing belt change. The original thermostat was still working.)

Looks like an exact match to thermo used in my 2008 Subaru Forester 2.5l. Installed along with new water pump, t belt, and crankshaft seal w/ a flush and fill. 100 miles and no issues yet.

Fits the Subaru EJ25 4-cyl engine and has worked for me for a few thousand miles. I have a 2005 Impreza Outback Sport that was chronically overheating at highway speeds and no garage could figure it out, so Google led me to a solution of replacing the radiator cap. A $6 part solved a huge issue. And though I don't know whether it was truly the cap or this thermostat and a coolant flush, this was also a cheap part that gave me solace. This is noticeably shorter than the OEM part, but otherwise was similar.
