After the fantastic, cliff-hanger ending to The Fallen Stars, the few month wait I had before reading the final book in the trilogy was torturous! But I knew I would not be disappointed by The Star Catcher and this was a breath-taking, brilliant end to the only fantasy series I have ever managed to read to the last book. Here, I was drawn in straight away, eager for Kellen and Cali to be reunited. What happens is made much more worthwhile if you read it yourself, so I can avoid spoilers, but what I can say is this is a stunning instalment to a series I’m a little sad to see end. Stephanie Keyes has definitely become my go-to writer for these kind of wonderful fantasy novels and I’m so excited to read anything she writes in the future.
Often towards the end of a series, I find characters can become a little flat and worn out and the story a little predictable. I’d be massively underselling the author to say that was the case here. Kellen, Cali and Gabe are developed even more here and their characters are still changing. I never have the sense of expecting what’s to come from them next and different characters kept winning me over. In The Star Catcher, we get a much more involved insight into Gabe than in the previous books and I loved his character, more so than I did Kellen’s in The Fallen Stars and The Star Child. Amongst the good versus evil type of vibe this book had, Gabe brought the humour and light and he so made me smile. Stephanie also introduces us to some new, fresh characters, such as Singer who Gabe is a little taken with. The way the author creates characters never fails to impress me. I can’t think of one character throughout the entire series that I felt needed to be built on more and they’re always memorable.Read more ›
I loved the introduction to new characters in this book - Rowan, Cali's sister and Singer, Rowan's daughter. Singer quickly became one of my absolute favourite characters because of her wit and sarcastic nature. I instantly warmed to her, even though some people didn't! However, it was great to catch up with all our old favourites again and I very much enjoyed the multiple viewpoints in this book; Kellen's, Gabe's, Singer's and Cali's. What struck me more with this book than the others is how easily identifiable the characters were based on their individual narratives. By this I mean that if Steph hadn't mentioned who each chapter belonged to, I probably would have been able to guess based on how they talk and I think that's a very talented thing to be able to do.
I read this book so quick, as a huge fan of the first two I was so incredibly excited to see how it would all end and come together and personally, I think the ending was perfect. The last line in particular. The entire story is mind-blowing with imagination and I think it all got tied up perfectly.Read more ›
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Star Catcher by Stephanie Keyes is a superb conclusion to her Star Child series. I had the pleasure of reading all three books, and I'll be honest with you, it's been quite a while since I've read a Young Adult series that I felt was written fluently and I actually enjoyed as a whole. Stephanie Keyes' style of writing is easy for readers to understand, but that doesn't take away from the content at all. Through the Star Child series, she grabs her readers by the hand and escapes into a world of adventure, sacrifice, mystery, and most of all, indefatigable love.
In this series we meet Kellen St. James (okay, how awesome is that name?) on his graduation day. Kellen has been the victim of the most unfortunate circumstances: his mother is dead. His father is a rich snob who wants nothing to do with him. He is very much alone, aside from his 'Gran' who lived all the way across the globe until her death 3 months earlier. The only hope he has is a dream that has materialized into an experience and he isn't even sure if it's real.
As we travel through Star Child and The Fallen Stars, Keyes brings fantasy to a whole new level. By the end of the second book (which ends on a huge cliffhanger, BTW!) my mind was reeling. She had a way of adding just the perfect amount of intrigue that kept me wanting more. Just when you think you have most things figured out, she throws a curveball at you and mixes things up again.
The newest book, The Star Catcher, did not disappoint. Usually I find that in a series that one book lacks in content, or the author seems to have completely rushed the ending (this happens way more often than I wish it would.Read more ›
