The alien time units and terms of familial hierarchy, do not feel clunky and hastily added in. This is one of the best books that I have read in a god long while.
If there are more books coming out by this author, I can only give him or her two words of encouragement....
A great read especially if you are a sci-fi fan and thrive in action, complex characters, and a roller coaster of emotions.
Reiter does not disappoint.
Eagerly waiting for the next series.
I'm an avid reader, a life-long sci-fi/fantasy fan, and a female - and this book delivers on all the levels I'm looking for. It really is the real deal. In picking up this prelude (and I can't wait for the rest of the series!) I was transported to another place & time - but one so fully fleshed out that I never once felt like I couldn't believe what was going on. It felt rational, real, and relatable while still being completely fantastical.
Everything in the writing of this prelude feels huge - but contained... like the deep breath before a scream, or the calm before the storm, or the pause before the gunshot sounds in a race. In the tradition of long-running series (Wheel of Time, Sword of Truth, etc.) - you just KNOW that this series is going to be EPIC... and bring you along for one hell of a ride.
As a huge sci-fi/fantasy fan, I'm well familiar with every wanna-be hack writer saying that their work is "Star Wars meets Lord of the Rings"... but in this case - I can actually say the claim (if made) would be justified. It's got all the action, suspense, magic, powers, conflict & pathos that you could hope for in a series like this.
One big difference between those stories & this one? WOMEN. Though the lead character (and most of the major players) in this prelude are men, there are (hold on to your hats) actual legitimate female characters. They aren't arm-candy, or need rescuing, or serve as place-holders or set-dressing. They're vibrant, talented, and as complex & varied as the males of the story.
Killer Action, Non-stop Story, New Realms to Discover, Engaging Characters, Outer Space...
Honestly, what more could you ask for?
Dungias is born into a noble House, but is a social outcast because he lacks the inherent racial ability to generate different forms of Energy. It is a problem for him personally and proves to be difficult for his family as it tries to maintain its station in their culture. Dungias celebrates in the triumphs in his family while keeping quiet his own heartache because of his 'handicap'. While he understands how his people look upon him, Dungias does not accept the definition of being lesser. He makes up for his energy manipulation shortcomings with quick wits and technological knowledge. He has learned and mastered many things his people have forgotten. This includes the way of the Traveler, something he has been chosen to become and in order to fulfill that destiny Dungias must travel thru multiple dimensions and the vastness of space attracting friends and enemies.
The story is very well written!!! It is delivered in such a way that you feel drawn in and makes you feel you are part of the story. There is a depth and richness to the characters that you don't find in a lot of books. The plot has several twists and turns that will keep you guessing and wanting for more. The action is fast paced and keeps the story moving smoothly. I highly recommend it, once you start you will not want to put it down until you finish it.
