Editorial Reviews

Foxygen have joined Star Power.
It is a punk band, and you can be in it, too.
Star Power is the radio station that you can hear only if you believe.
We're all stars of the scene.

Foxygen…And Star Power is the 2014 double album from Foxygen, a CINEMATIC AUDITORY ADVENTURE for the speedy freaks, skull krunchers, abductees, and misfits...Made by Foxygen at Dream Star Studios in their Secret Haunted House with the UFOs flying around in the sky.

A gaggle of guest stars. Roman-numeraled musical suites. Vocals recorded on a shoddy tape machine at The Beverly Hills Hotel and Chateau Marmont. A svelte 82-minute run time of psych-ward folk, cartoon fantasia, songs that morph into each other, weaving in and out of the head like UFO radio transmission skullkrush music. ADHD star power underground revolution. Soft-rock indulgences, D&D doomrock and paranoid bathroom rompers. Process is the point. A kaleidoscoping view. Blasphemy even the gods smile one. Rock and roll for the skull...*

*From Patty Smith's 1973 CREEM review of Todd Rundgren's A Wizard, A True Star. The section concludes "Todd Rundgren is preparing us for a generation of frenzied children who will dream in animation."

I will start by saying that I love Foxygen- We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic was easily one of my favorite albums for some time and I saw them recently (Boston) and they were awesome. Unfortunately …And Star Power is just a mess. There are fragments of genius here-some of the sounds are really great. You just have to get through a bunch of slop to get the gems. I am sure they thought they were putting together some brilliant concept album, borrowing from VU to create a modern noise rock/punk/psychedelic masterpiece, but it just feels like a bloated mess which could have used quite a bit of editing to make a single great album rather than 2 overwrought albums.

The live show was amazing, with the backup singers bringing a great dimension and energy to many of these songs that is just lacking on the album.

This is a hidden gem. A lot of people will and have panned this album, it's long, there are long sections of just noise and the lyncs are difficult to make out. But behind those flaws is another Neo Psychedelic masterpice. Sometimes it sounds like a Lost George Harrison album, sometimes it sounds like the Stooges. It's a great a ride and one I can't wait to go on again.

This isn't everyone's cup of tea but in a world of Auto tune, and cookie cutter pop that sounds the same coughtorikelleycough and terrible Rap music an album like this is a breath of fresh air that shows that not only is good music still being made but even with old sounds and song structures, there is still creativity in music.

Foxygen has such potential and there are many glimpses of it on this double disc release. The band came up with some really good ideas for music which they were unable to flush out musically. Such a shame too when considering their last release was so much fun.

Is Foxygen the greatest band in the world right now? Probably. This double cd is their proper second album and is less conventional, more scattershot and lo fi than their stellar debut but it is stuffed with adventure as songs morph about , riffs burrow their way in and twinkling melodic codas abound. Patience is the key here. Subsequent listens reveal hidden pleasures and sweet sounds.
Imagine no pun intended John Lennon as a member of The Rolling Stones. That is the feeling I get here. Heck "Everyone Needs Love " sounds like Lennon fronting a pseudo 70's disco soul pop band. While many influences converge they mainly sound like an updated version of the pop end of spectrum Stones like "Angie" and "Between The Buttons." They also share a perversity with band like the Stones and The Smiths with singer Sam France coming across like some misfit nephew of Mick Jagger.
Part One of the album contains a run of soulful rum infused pop songs whereas the Star Power potion as one critic put it sounds like a lost Nilsson rock opera. "The Overture" features the cutest piano motif and "What are we good for" starts off sounding like Lou Reed before jumping into an insanely catchy chorus that kicks ass.
Part Two features three stunners "I Don't Have ......." , "Flowers" and Cannibal Holocaust are all addictive winners that weave to and fro.
The notorious bad ass third part features some heavy duty psychedelic power riffing and crunch that amount to stuffing but the middle pack of songs are quite engaging culminating in the terrific Stones like riffing on " Freedom II".
The two final songs on Part Four help soften the landing.
What's next for Foxygen? Will they implode or even lose their mojo overnight? Or is their long predicted masterpiece lurking in the talented fever pitch minds of Jonathan Rado and Sam France?: We can only hope. Stay tuned.

The album is fantastic. The first disc is packed with catchy 70s sounding pop/ soft rock while the second disc is like an avant garde garage rock show. It's a bit different than their previous album, but still very satisfying. Foxygen's might rip off their songs from classic rock bands, but it works. You can hear hints of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, ELO, Black Sabbath, and many more throughout the album. '...And Star Power' also has some very satisfying guests on a few of the tracks. I've been listening to the album on repeat all week.

I bought this cd with high hopes that it would be like their last album "We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic" which I absolutely can not get enough of.
After reading a few reviews, I got a little worried that this might not be the same Foxygen that I had come to love--(which it wasn't) but even though these guys took a different turn...I am hooked again. One listen is all it took to know that I would be listening to this one just as much.

It is definitely different from their last effort & at times a little crazy & erratic which may turn some people away. Of course if you are looking into this kind of music then like myself, this is the kind of craziness you like anyway...right?

So don't hesitate, buy this album now!
I had to order it through Amazon because sadly enough, on the first day of release I went to multiple stores excited to pick up this album and not one place carried it / So hard to find good music that's not mainstream at any retailer anymore. I am looking forward to many future releases from these guys.
