The purpose of this note goes beyond hawking my son's book or any desire to share my personal situation. It is to show that the idea of Star Profile goes way beyond being a management tool to develop star employees and star managers. I cannot picture any human situation where a Star Profile approach couldn't be beneficial and that includes the military! It doesn't mean the private can disobey orders, or simply quit. It does mean that the private and the sergeant have done some hard thinking about what is really important to them. Then they have taken the next difficult step and shared it with each other. Out of this comes mutual understanding and respect for each other. Differences, duties, and responsibilities are learned and respected by each other. Sometimes a transfer may be necessary, but it will be one supported by both.
This holds true in education as well. Had I known, understood and used a Star Profile technique as an elementary teacher, principal and university professor the teachers, the students and especially, I would have been far more successful.
To over simplify, the Star Profile is a tool that can be used by any group of people who interact with each other in some significant and continuous manner. It is for those who base their relationships on truth, honesty, and respect. And who are willing to risk the level of communication necessary to achieve these win-win relations.
