If you're a big sci-fi fan (and not too picky for that genre) it's actually pretty good. It's certainly a bit campy & has a somewhat comic book feel to it. You won't find A list actors or top notch special effects (especially in the first few minutes), but most of it gets a solid B-, or at least a C+. Imagine Buck Rogers blended with Masters of the Universe, then throw in a little steam punk. Some of the outfits/costumes/etc. are really quite fun. The acting & effects remind me of Robin Hood or Power Rangers but the setting is different. So if your critical or expecting Star Wars, keep looking. But if you're open minded and can handle some cheesiness, you'll probably like it - especially if you can watch it free on Prime. ;)

"Star Raiders: The Adventures of Saber Raine" is a movie so bad, even RiffTrax couldn't save it. I bought the unriffed original DVD and subsequently saw the RiffTrax version (which this is not, just to be clear) in the theater. Despite being a huge fan of cheesy movies and fun sci-fi epics, I found "Star Raiders" an almost impossible slog.
Casper Van Dien is the one name you may know in the film, and he plays the titular Saber Raine, a swashbuckling space mercenary who's been hired to find a couple of royal space kids on a planet with a giant spooky space castle. Despite being a very recent film, the costuming and effects are particularly noteworthy for being bad, and provided the only real onscreen amusement. The film suffers from terrible storytelling and acting, and evidently opens in the middle of star raiding already in progress. (There frankly isn't much star raiding, though there's a lot of walking around in forests in ludicrous garb.) I won't even bother with a plot summary as it doesn't matter. The best performance was by the hot lizard girl, but let's be honest; this is an exercise in how not to make a movie. I advise you to take the hint and learn how not to watch this movie.

I would give this a 3/5 if it was not that it is clearly a simple lack of experience on the part of the production crew that has limited this film, while certain small things foreshadow them becoming competent film producers given the right experience. They simply tried to do more then they were capable of yet. The overall lack of experience, is about the only down side to this film. The entire film from plot, to VFX are solid at the base, but they lack the flourish and polish of knowing how to correctly tell their story on screen that many people are used to in blockbuster films.
Simple things like actually keeping all your perspectives aligned correctly when doing your composite shots, to actually having your actors point their weapons where they are supposed to be shooting. Or at least editing the film to make it look like they pointed in the right direction. It is the small stuff like that that makes this film feel like it was low quality. But underneath all the mistakes of an inexperienced crew there is solid promise peeking out for future productions. As they learn how to hone and polish the story telling skills they will be producing better films. I would be interested in watching the sequel that they clearly foreshadowed.
In the end I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed thinking up all the ways I could think of to make it a more solid polished production with better flow and presentation.

I'm not sure who is giving this 4 and 5 stars... I'm giving it 3 to be generous... because it's somewhere between borderline B-rate comedy and sci-fi... The CGI is just laughably flat out awful... and the repeated use of silly 1 liners is pathetic...
Somehow though, they managed to squeeze in a little kung-fu... I'm not sure how that fit in the budget, but whatever...
The plot itself is actually not 1/2 bad... And even surprised me with a little twist...
If you are bored and want a sort of funny, but lame at the same time, space movie to chill out to... go for it... believe me, the special effects are pretty bad... worse than like that old Hercules TV show hahahahaha...

You might laugh at the cheesy acting and weird visual effects in this film, but just remember it produced on a low budget.

I'm always interested in science fiction movies no matter what even if they get terrible reviews. This movie is one of many that get poor marks from both critics and average viewers alike, so it's no surprise that I agree with what the majority have to say about it ranging from the poor acting to weird visual effects. Now, I did think the premise of the film was intriguing and worthy of production, but this low budget production didn't have the necessary monetary or casting power to make this a true success to be remembered. I think only you can decide though.

Are you throwing away a pair of ripped jeans? Dig them out of the trash, stitch up the tear, and throw them away again. Time better spent than watching this. Here are the infallible signs that a movie will be terrible: Gravitas Ventures? The movie has a budget of dozens of dollars. Casper van Dien? He will be the movie's best actor and he is a terrible actor. Long scenes of actors walking through the woods/desert/wilderness with outlandish costumes reciting bad dialog? Turn the movie off. I like movies where people behave just a little like actual people would behave under the same circumstances. Way too much to ask for this flic. Why two stars instead of one? Because they put a periscope on Van Dien's space ship. A periscope! How cool is that?

Cheesy. That is how I would describe this film. Cheesy. The acting was bad, the plot somewhat interesting, and the special effects reminded me of the days of early science-fiction. However cheesy I found this film, I did enjoy it. It provided me with entertainment and allowed me to escape reality for a bit. It definitely is a B-Movie. It was fun and I would watch it again and hope there will be a second movie in the works.

Made with the cheapest budget imaginable . certainly no star wars that's for sure.poor wardrobe and make up.you expect to see a fairy liquid bottle held by string zooming through space.keep looking as anything is possible here.makes starship troopers look top notch.the actor from that film must be really on the bread line to even consider making this film.....you have been warned... if you are 6 years old maybe for you.

awful low budget low to no acting talent and the most expensive and well produced element is the picture on the box. A cynical rip off of the Marvel type movies etc. This is like the earliest low tech sci fi of 60s done on the very cheap.
