The growth for basically every character was wonderful, not least of all Ari and Tristan. The slow burn (my favorite type of Romance) was a sizzle to an inferno, engulfing me in the best way. The deepening of their relationship was perfectly done, slowly unveiling the sadnesses they both hid just under the surface endearing them to me.
The friendships that developed with Kevin and Jenny were a great addition, and I really enjoyed the bit of surprise with these two by the end. They weren't who I had pegged them to be in the beginning.
This had some really great suspense and tense scenes, involving so much of what you might expect to encounter while on a schooner at sea. Animals, other humans, roiling waves, and a storm or two all created a riveting drama.
I will say that I don't know much (okay, anything) about sailing, but definitely feel like I was there on the adventure with Ari, learning about it all. The descriptions are so vivid and the setting just so incredibly immersive!
It has to be noted that Miller did a nice job of Scottish accents here too. I had no problem hearing the Scot in Tristan or the Captain, which was really just a treat. :)
The author keeps you engaged within the narrative as the undeniable chemistry between the protagonists unfolds. Ari and Tristan's journey is full of emotion. It's tragic, yet heart-warming as the pair overcome personal issues whilst trying to ignore their feelings for one another because students and crew can't fraternise. But rules can be broken?
This is my first book by this author and I hope to read more from her in the future.
The one-of-a-kind setting and micro-culture here is a semester at sea program on tall ship in the Caribbean where the characters frequently go scuba diving. This particular setting was double-strong “book crack” for me because I would have loved to do a semester at sea in college but didn’t have the chance, and through reading, I feel as if I’ve gotten a taste for the experience that I didn’t have. I DID get my fair share of time at sea as an officer in the Navy for the five years, so I can absolutely vouch for Beth Anne’s nautical accuracy and I really enjoyed comparing and contrasting the workings of a cutting edge warship with a historical tall ship operating in the modern day.
As far as characters, I was a gonner for the male lead, Tristan. A sexy, sensitive, Scottish, fiddle-playing, professional sailor…what’s not to love? The main character, Ari, was intriguing and relatable as she battled through the repercussions of an accident that left her with a paralyzing physical fear threatening to undercut her entire future career plan.
This book is an excellent choice for readers who like a healthy dose of adrenaline and adventure with their romance, and to be completely immersed in an accurate and unique setting.
The author adeptly conveys the day to day reality of life onboard a ship where the amenities are to be found in the sights of the sea and the budding love affair between her protagonists Ari and Tristan.
Ari's voyage is not just on the ocean, but within herself. She triumphs by conquering her fears and opening her heart to love.
Buy "A Star to Steer Her By" and take a romantic, moving journey with Ari and Tristan.
