The other adventure in this one involves the orion girl from the first Abrams movie, Gaila and her brother. I liked it too, it made her character more than it was in movie, which showed her only as one of Kirk's conquests. And let's face it, there's so many of them that we never take their roles seriously anymore. They're like props in the background as soon as he puts his arm around them. But that's why I like this story, there's a real history behind Gaila's character -- and that's more than I can say about the rest of Kirk's ladies.
The other half is fleshing out the Rachel Nichols character from the first JJA film. This was an entertaining story as well.
Even though this is volume 12, you can start here if you've only seen the two films and be just fine. After this I would read Manifest Destiny which is very good.
Star Trek: Manifest Destiny
And if you need a refresher for the (Prime) Mirror Universe, I recommend this set
Star Trek: Alternate Realities Collective

A chance rendezvous leads to the kidnapping of two Orion Starfleet officers and Kirk is willing to risk war with the Syndicate to rescue them.
Again, the stories are well written by Johnson and the layouts, colouring and character art are simply excellent.
