Both stories were really well done, but I think I liked the retelling slightly more just because it actually mixed in a couple of stories. The whole new story I hope to be able to read more about it, but doubt more will be written.

The mirror universe strikes again! And in the best --or do I mean worst?-- form possible! A merciless Spock, a diabolical Kirk, an ambitious Chekhov, and --much to an Into Darkness fan's delight-- a pacifist Khan! The only drawback is that you will want more after you read it.
The other adventure in this one involves the orion girl from the first Abrams movie, Gaila and her brother. I liked it too, it made her character more than it was in movie, which showed her only as one of Kirk's conquests. And let's face it, there's so many of them that we never take their roles seriously anymore. They're like props in the background as soon as he puts his arm around them. But that's why I like this story, there's a real history behind Gaila's character -- and that's more than I can say about the rest of Kirk's ladies.

One half is the NuTrek version of the mirror universe. There is a great cameo I do not want to spoil for you. The art is spot-on.

The other half is fleshing out the Rachel Nichols character from the first JJA film. This was an entertaining story as well.

Even though this is volume 12, you can start here if you've only seen the two films and be just fine. After this I would read Manifest Destiny which is very good.

Star Trek: Manifest Destiny

And if you need a refresher for the (Prime) Mirror Universe, I recommend this set

Star Trek: Alternate Realities Collective

I'm sad that this series is ending with volume 13. It has worked so well as a companion to the movies. This volume is just as good as the previous ones. You get an entertaining story about the mirror universe as well as one giving some background to the Orions.

This is fantastic! Loved the Reboot mirror verse story and the art for both stories is great, unlike previous volumes that struggled with consistency.

An Jon storm deposits the 'Enterprise' in a strange, mirror, universe where the crew are faced with counterparts who use violence as a tool of advancement and a small exiled cohort of Augments led by Khan Noonien Singh may be Kirk's best hope of returning home.

A chance rendezvous leads to the kidnapping of two Orion Starfleet officers and Kirk is willing to risk war with the Syndicate to rescue them.

Again, the stories are well written by Johnson and the layouts, colouring and character art are simply excellent.
