In the cooperative game, each player gets to build a fleet consisting of 120 points. The Borg Cube gets no upgrade cards, no captain, and no crew. Instead, the game offers a deck of Objective cards for the players, and special attack cards for the Borg. The Borg begins the game with 30 shield points and 30 hull points per player, which is kept track of on special charts included with the Cube. Each turn, the objective card is revealed telling players what they must do to gain the card- usually it is delivering a certain number of damage points to the Cube. If they are successful that round, they claim the card and can multiple cards later to deal damage to the Cube, to force it not to attack for a turn, and more. Next, the Borg attack card is revealed, indicating just what the Borg can do that turn- usually indicating its weapon's value (red attack dice rolled). The Borg get attacks equal to the number of players, and always target the closest ships. The Borg cannot target the same ship during the same turn.
Once the Borg Cube's shields are down it launches the sphere which attempts to leave the play area, thus entering a temporal rift which will send it back in time to change history. Players must destroy the sphere before it gets off the board or they lose the game. If they succeed in destroying the sphere, they must work together to destroy the Cube once and for all.
The Borg Cube with Port Sphere is a really fun addition to Attack Wing, that Star Trek fans will no doubt love. It's a big beautiful game piece that further sucks players into the game's theme. There is even an eerie green glow that the Cube emits when light shines behind it. The cooperative game is a whole lot of fun and introduces and engaging new way to play Star Trek Attack Wing. Generally, I really like this addition to the game, though I was disappointed that the sphere does not easily fit into the Cube, and indeed, after trying for a while to get it in- then trying to get it back out, and think I'll just leave it out for the foreseeable future, (unless somebody knows some trick to it that I overlooked).
If you like Star Trek Attack Wing, you will want to get your hands on this great expansion.
