DISCOVERY is fabulous - the writing, the characters, the storylines. Sonequa Martin-Green is sublime as the leading lady of the franchise. Star Trek was long overdue for a black woman lead and the character, Michael Burnham - the first regular since Uhura - is a breath of fresh air. This show takes the franchise in different directions - this is not your grandfather's or your father's Star Trek. Season long storylines, intense focus on the lead character, and officers who do not fit neatly in the Starfleet mold definitely signals that something different is afoot. And yet, this show still feels like Star Trek; the characters devotion to Starfleet is true. Special plug for Doug Jones (Saru), Mary Wiseman (Tilly), and Anthony Rapp (Stamets).
You will read reviews from people who proclaim that Discovery is not as good as the other series - that the show is not really Star Trek. Ignore them. While these people are entitled to their opinions, they are the folks who want the same Star Trek from the 60s and 80s - the ones who fought so hard for that spin-off show. They have definite ideas of who should sit in the captain's chair and have been vocally ugly about anyone and anything that deviates from their own views.
I applaud the Star Trek showrunners and the producers for having the vision to realize that in the twenty-first century, the franchise needed to stretch beyond the acceptable practices from decades ago. Star Trek Discovery is just as good as the original (TOS) and its spinoffs. And that's just the truth.
