I'm always one to research on 'Wikipedia' or other online encyclopedias to discover the different fates of the many major players in the stories. I wasn't disappointed with how the whole story played out from the beginning of the Federation to the present day with Picard and co.
After reading the first part of the book, I researched futher and watched the ST:TOS episode "Metamorphosis". The book was basically a followup to that whole episode. Watch it, and then read the book
One particular scene, in which the origin of the Starfleet insignia is revealed, sent shivers down my spine the first time I read it.
One more I will make: this book was first published in 1994, two years before First Contact was released. Much of the story revolves around Zephram Cochrane, but it isn't the Cochrane you know from that movie. It is, however, true to Cochrane as he was introduced in the Original Series, so as long as this doesn't bother you (it didn't bother me at all), then read this book!
Also, the constant use of pseudo-scientific jargon is tiresome and smells like a load of... well, you know.
Other than that, it makes for an entertaining read.
Set back and enjoy this model. I find I read it about once a year!
